This MP Woman Gave Birth On A Muddy Road Because The Ambulance Couldn’t Enter Her Village

I remember sitting in my 8th grade geography class and listening to the teacher ramble on about how most of our country doesn’t have ‘pukka’ roads. I didn’t pay much attention at the time. It’s no secret that India isn’t exactly a developed nation. But today, the deplorable conditions of our villages have left me infuriated. You see, a woman in MP was forced to give birth on a muddy road because the ambulance could not pick her up from her home due to unpaved and uneven roads.

25-year-old Neelam Adiwasi was experiencing labour pains on Sunday. Her husband called an ambulance but they were unable to pick her up because of the conditions of the road that connects her village. She didn’t have a choice but to walk 2 kms to reach the ambulance. While she was walking, Neelam gave birth on the side of a muddy road. After the delivery, she was rushed to the hospital. Even though she and her baby are stable, this is not okay.

Neelam’s husband Pankaj Adivasi said, “My wife was having labour pains on Sunday. I called Janani Express (an ambulance service for pregnant women). But when the ambulance driver reached the village, he said he couldn’t drive inside the village due to the poor condition of the road. We were left with no option but to cover around 2km by foot on the muddy road. Neelam couldn’t hold the baby in her womb [during the walk] and gave birth on the road.”

He went on to say that even though he was glad his wife and child were okay, they had been treated horribly by the corrupted system. Pankaj mentions that even though they have asked for pukka roads innumerable times, nothing has been done. Reportedly, the ambulance and the medical officers didn’t enter the village because there was a 100% chance that the vehicle would get stuck.

The life of a woman is hard as it is. We don’t need any of these external factors to make things worse.
