This Couple From Madurai Had A Mid-Air Wedding To Bypass Stringent COVID 19 Restrictions In The State. This Is Stupid

We Indians have a special knack for finding out-of-the-box solutions to most of our problems. In other words, jugaad. And this ongoing deadly pandemic has been the perfect opportunity for people to showcase this particular skill, though we are not entirely sure we appreciate it. People don’t seem to understand that finding creative ways to flout COVID safety norms is only harming us further. Look at this couple from Madurai, for instance, who decided to hold a wedding in a plane, mid-air, to hoodwink authorities and get out of the stringent restrictions put in place for public safety. As much as I want to appreciate their ingenuity, I can’t possibly look beyond the fact that they not only flouted COVID safety norms but also knowingly put so many of their family and friends at risk.

In a video that has gone viral on social media, a couple from Madurai was seen getting married on a plane with their friends and family on board. There was no safety guideline being followed, they weren’t even wearing masks. In an attempt to bypass COVID 19 restrictions on such gatherings, this couple booked an entire SpiceJet flight. They flew from Madurai to Bangalore and the wedding was performed during the flight. This is not okay. They have taken the term covidiot to a whole new level, literally. Be it on the ground or in the sky, a large gathering of people is like a hotbed for the coronavirus. This isn’t so tough to understand, is it?

Numerous photos and videos from this plane wedding have gone viral. One video shows the groom tying the mangalsutra around the bride’s neck with a large crowd sitting in the seats behind them. It’s absolutely insane. The Regulator DGCA (Directorate General of Civil Aviation) has launched an inquiry into this mid-air wedding. They have asked the airline and the Airport Authority for a full report. The crew that was on that flight has been de-rostered and SpiceJet has been directed to lodge a complaint against all those who were caught violating COVID 19 safety norms.

In a statement, Spicejet said that the flight was charted by a travel agent who claimed it was a “post-wedding joyride”. They said, “The client was clearly briefed on Covid guidelines to be followed and denied permission for any activity to be performed on board. The agent and the guest passengers were briefed in detail, both in writing as well as verbally, on social distancing and safety norms to be followed as per Covid guidelines both at the airport and on board the aircraft throughout the journey.” A SpiceJet spokesperson also said, “Despite repeated requests and reminders the passengers did not follow Covid guidelines and the airline is taking appropriate action as per rules.”

Just like everyone else on social media, I am amazed at this couple’s inventiveness. On the other hand, I am disappointed that despite surging COVID cases and deaths, people still aren’t understanding the importance of not crowding and following strict safety protocols. This couple might as well have sent COVID 19 a formal invitation *facepalm*.
