Odisha Officer Responsible For Enforcing COVID Safety Norms Found Dancing Maskless At Her Brother’s Wedding

In the last year and a half, I have attended my fair share of pandemic weddings. While some follow COVID safety norms, others just want to forget we’re amid a deadly pandemic. I understand the sentiment but being maskless amid a crowd that isn’t maintaining social distancing is something we don’t condone. However, there are more than a few covidiots who don’t seem to get the memo despite numerous warnings and even finings and punishments from local authorities. Recently though, there was such a case in Odisha that put all the others to shame. A woman officer responsible for enforcing the COVID safety norms was found flouting maskless, dancing at her brother’s wedding. If the authorities themselves are throwing caution to the wind then it’s no wonder India is in this abysmal situation.

A woman officer with the Odisha Administrative Service (OAS) was found dancing maskless at her brother’s wedding. She violated the Covid-19 lockdown guidelines imposed by the state government to curb the surge of coronavirus cases. This woman was working as a tehsildar of Sukinda and is responsible for enforcing the COVID 19 guidelines that state that only 25 people are allowed to attend such functions. Ironic, huh?

This incident received criticism from Jaipur’s District Collector, Chakravarti Singh Rathore. He said, “The woman tehsildar is on leave right now. Once she joins, an explanation will be called. Based on the explanation, a further course of action will be decided”. Further adding, “Be it an officer or the public. All should have some rationality in their approach.”

Hopefully, this woman will be held accountable for her actions. She is responsible for ensuring the general public follows the COVID 19 guidelines. This makes her a role model. If she’s going around flouting safety norms, who is to stop others? It’s up to the authorities to ensure public safety. What happened here is absolutely unacceptable.
