This Couple From Karnataka Had A Sustainable Wedding With Just A Tree For Decoration And It’s Beautiful

Planning a wedding a major undertaking and the pandemic has only made it tougher. From the guest list to the food and from the venue to what music will be playing, everything has to be just perfect. But more than anything, and despite what many Indians believe, a wedding is an incredibly personal event. There have to be elements of the bride and groom everywhere, especially in the venue. For instance, I love mountains and so my dream wedding would take place on a cliff somewhere, surrounded by snow-capped mountains. Okay, I got weak in the knees just thinking about it. Another fabulous example is this architect couple who recently had a sustainable wedding under a tree. It was gorgeous!

Illustrator and architect Namrata Toraskar recently got married to architect Varun Thautam. After their search for the perfect temple in Bengaluru, to tie the knot in, did not yield any results, they started looking for alternatives. It was by accident that Namrata stumbled upon a honge tree (Indian beech) behind Varun’s house in Yelahanka. Their entire wedding was planned around the tree. It’s just so cute.

Namrata said, “The tree became the centre around which everything took place. The scale of the wedding was decided by its foliage or shade — around 40 people could be accommodated around it.”

The couple wanted the wedding and all the other ceremonies to be small and meaningful all while adhering to the COVID 19 safety protocols. Namrata, her father and Varun built the mandap under the Honge tree in two days. The couple said it just felt right. Not to mention that it was the perfect decision for them considering Varun’s architecture practice creates sustainable construction works. What’s more sustainable than having a wedding under a tree?

Talking about the tree and the wedding, Varun said, “We are blessed to have been able to transform it into a place of meaning, an object of memory. It is very special to me, this symbolises who we are, the things we do and what we want to do.”

Namrata calls the tree “an accidental discovery”. She spotted it when Varun’s mother was showing her some plants near their house. That’s when this idea of having the wedding under the tree came to her. She said, “Usually honge trees have drooping branches, because of which you can’t stand under one. This one didn’t have those. It got me thinking ‘why not have it here?’” Further adding, “It was something very natural that fit into the life we believe in, not diluted by the fast-paced life we are forced to live.”

This is just so adorable and hopefully, following their lead, there will be more and more sustainable weddings.
