This Bizarre Japanese TV Show Features Young Women Just Running On The Streets Of Tokyo And It Has Lots Of Fans

There are a lot of aspects of my job that leave me exasperated. Mainly, writing about violent crimes against women. And also, waking up in the morning to work but I think that’s an issue most of us face. On the other hand though, I feel like my job is more entertaining than most people’s. For the most part, I get to mock Bollywood songs, write about utterly absurd things that happen at Indian weddings, and discuss all the strange things that happen all over the world. On that note, today we are talking about a Japanese show that features women just sprinting up and down streets and hills. It’s one of the longest ‘running’ shows in Japan.

When I came across this show and a few articles that have been written about it, I was baffled. The show, named Zenryoku Zaka, airs on TV Asahi and it has been successfully running for nearly 15 years now. Each episode features one woman, usually an actress, a singer or a TV performer, just running up and down the streets of Tokyo. It’s bizarre how many people stay up late to watch this. It seems like this show is very particular too. They never feature the same woman twice and they rarely change locations either. Reportedly, TV Ashi is straying away from its female-only rule. This show will also feature men now but young women will continue to be the primary focus. I am really struggling to see the point of this show or its appeal. If you watch them all back-to-back, I can guarantee that it will look like a real-life version of Temple Run.

I have watched some extremely horrible movies and shows out of boredom but this is a whole new ball game. Although, I have to know where I can sign up to be featured. I too would like to be paid to just run up and down a street and a few hills. At least it will get me off my ass and motivate me to exercise. Oh, maybe that is the point?
