This Australian Woman Gave Birth To A Healthy Baby Boy Despite Having Two Vaginas With Two Uteruses

During this lockdown, like most people, I have spent most of my free time sprawled across my bed watching shows on various OTT platforms. I came to a realisation that I loved hospital drama shows. Gray’s Anatomy, Dr House, The Good Doctor etc. I find that there is nothing more exhilarating than watching a group of doctors frantically trying to save someone’s life while also dealing with their personal dramas. Somehow though they always have patients with the rarest diseases and conditions. That makes it even more gripping. And so, you can imagine that when I read about bizarre medical cases in real life I get extremely excited. The most recent one being about this woman who gave birth to a healthy child despite having two vaginas and two uteruses. I don’t know how this is possible but apparently, it is.

31-year-old Evelyn from Australia gave birth to a healthy baby despite the doctors being very sceptical about her chances. The rare condition that she has is called uterus didelphys. It means that Evelyn has two vaginas and two uteruses each leading to its own fallopian tube and ovary. Basically, she can have two babies in either one at the same time.

A nurse by training, Evelyn realised that something was unusual about her when she got her first period and tampons wouldn’t work for her. She found out about her condition only when she went to get an abortion in her 20s. The doctors could not find the embryo and when they did, they found that she had two separate reproductive systems. Her condition means that she can’t track her ovulation because doctors can’t determine if both her ovaries release an egg each month or if they alternate.

Even though Evelyn can get pregnant with two babies at once, the chances were very low because the extra reproductive tract means her abdominal cavity doesn’t have enough space for a foetus to grow. But despite all odds, Evelyn was impregnated and she delivered a healthy baby.

During her pregnancy, Evelyn rested a lot and went to two doctor appointments every week. To everyone’s surprise, her baby bump grew only on one side. Considering her condition, she could not give birth naturally as the baby would get stuck because of the wall between her left and right vagina. She had a C-section at 37-weeks. Needless to say, everyone was extremely fascinated by her unique case. Her son is now seven weeks old and is perfectly healthy. I guess all’s well that ends well, right?
