Thane Civic Body Held A COVID 19 Vaccination Drive For People From The Transgender Community

The majority population in our country continues to hold an extremely regressive mindset. They’re rigidly clinging onto traditional gender norms that, ideally, should’ve become obsolete by now. This has caused a lot of problems for a lot of people. The transgender community, especially. Being forced to live on the fringes of society, they have to strive for every basic right. Although, compared to a few years ago, transgender people are in a slightly better position today. We say this after the Thane civic body held a special vaccination camp for the transgender community despite a lot of them not possessing valid documents. This was a much-needed initiative.

On Saturday, the Thane civic body held a vaccination camp specifically for people from the transgender community. The reason that this is a huge deal is that a lot of people from this community don’t even have an Aadhar Card. This made it especially difficult for them to get vaccinated through the regular channel.

Speaking to the media, Bhawana, a transgender, said, “We have been battling this pandemic for two years now. We also required vaccination but many of us don’t have an Aadhar card. Due to this reason we were not being able to get vaccinated. So we requested the Thane administration to organise a separate camp for our community. We are thankful to the Thane Municipal Corporation for organising this camp.”

Not only did the Thane civic body help the transgender community get vaccinated, but they also gave out forms to get their basic documents prepared. Kamini, another transgender who attended this vaccination camp said, “We are very thankful to the administration who have organised this camp. They not only helped us with vaccination but also in our documentation, They provided us with forms for getting our basic documents prepared. I would urge all the people to not fear vaccination and step forward to get vaccinated because it would save their lives.”

This initiative should be put in process all around India. It’s essential that we start protecting transgender lives.
