Taliban Leader Says Women’s Rights Should Be Based On Islamic Values And Culture

It rarely happens that I don’t believe certain news but this piece of news is so shocking that I had to read it thrice. As we all know, the Taliban took over Afghanistan and since then, they have had several restrictions on women and it is worsening. However, a Taliban leader recently came out to support women’s education and said that they should be provided with their rights based on Afghan culture and Islamic values. Yes, you heard it right.  

Sher Mohammad Abbas Stanikzai – a senior leader of the Taliban spoke about women’s education rights in a recent gathering to mark the death anniversary of Mullah Akhtar Mohammad Mansour – a former Islamic Emirate leader. He said that women should be provided with their rights which should be based on Afghan culture and Islamic values, as per reports. He mentioned that the government should be responsible to provide a safe education to all the women in the nation. Tell me this is real.

According to the reports, Stanikzai said that women in Afghanistan cannot even ask for inheritance and asked where will they learn Shariah’s lesson if they are deprived of their right to education. 

Earlier, the Taliban banned female students above grade six from going to school, this order has been criticised by many countries around the world. They also ordered female TV presenters to cover their faces, women are not even allowed to board the plane without a male chaperone, and the list goes on and on.

In August 2021, the Taliban took control of Afghanistan and curtailed women’s freedom and rights in the nation. After that, women have been majorly excluded from the workforce.
