Taliban Orders Female TV Presenters And Women On Screen To Cover Their Faces On Air. Afghanistan Is Stifling Its Women!

If you’ve been reading the news or are active on social media, you’d know the worsening situation of women in Afghanistan. Ever since the Taliban took over the country, the restrictions on women are tightening – banned from traveling without male company, secondary schools are shut for women, sports are not allowed for women, etc. Adding to that, yet another order has been passed by the Taliban which states that all female TV presenters and women appearing on screen have to cover their faces while being on air. Seriously?

On Wednesday, many media houses were told about the new order that stated that all women appearing on screen have to cover their faces while being on air. The spokesperson of the Taliban Ministry for the Prevention of Vice and Promotion of Virtue said that this new order will be put into effect from May 21, 2022.

The new order comes two weeks after the Taliban directed all Afghan women to wear a face veil in public and if not followed then they would face punishment. An Afghan women journalist who is working for a local TV station in Kabul said to a media house, “Shocked hearing the latest news. They are putting indirect pressure on us to stop us presenting on TV… How can I read the news with my mouth covered? I don’t know what to do now. But I have to work as I am the breadwinner of my family”.
