DCW Chairperson Swati Maliwal Reports Child Pornography And Rape Videos On Twitter, Demands Explanation
There are a lot of things wrong with the world we live in, I think we can all agree with that. But one of the many things that anger me is when children are exploited to any degree. Call it an innate maternal instinct or basic human decency but I believe children are the last of our species to deserve anything bad happening to them. So you can imagine how much my blood boiled when I saw the Chairperson of the Delhi Commission for Women, Swati Maliwal talking about the heinous child pornography and rape videos which are on Twitter and are being sold too.

Swati Maliwal called Twitter India Policy Head and Delhi Police in connection with tweets displaying child pornography and rape videos of women and children on the social networking site Twitter. The DCW stated that many of the tweets showed children completely naked, and many of them also showed brutal rape and other non-consensual sexual activities with children and women. The Commission took suo moto cognizance of several tweets on Twitter that openly depicted videos and photographs of sexual acts involving children. The DCW has also summoned the Delhi Police to file an FIR in the case and has advised that the women and children seen in the recordings of rape and child pornography be identified and given assistance.

The DCW said that they were surprised to find that some of these Twitter videos even showed rapes of women and children who were asleep. Furthermore, they added that some of the Twitter accounts involved in these crimes seem to be running a business where they charge other social media users money in exchange for sending them pornographic and rape films of minors. The Delhi Police and Twitter have both received a list of these tweets from the Commission.

Maliwal talked about her surprise over the types of rape and child pornographic videos that are openly available on Twitter. She said that such content needs to be removed from Twitter right away, and Delhi Police should file an FIR. She urged that systems be created to ensure that such videos are instantly removed and that law enforcement agencies are notified of the offenders. She demanded that Twitter be held answerable for allowing the uploading and selling of such “filthy and objectionable” content on its platform.

The DCW has requested an explanation for why Twitter did not delete or report the tweets. The Commission has also asked for information on how many of these tweets are currently accessible on Twitter. It also wanted to know how many tweets that showed child pornography and rape were found, taken down, and reported over the past four years on Twitter. The DCW has also requested the SOPs for Twitter’s deletion and reporting of such content.

Firstly, no matter how many times I read or hear news like this, I am always shocked. I cannot fathom people being disgusting enough to not only upload such content but also buy it. Secondly, for a platform like Twitter that has banned controversial and problematic public figures in the past to not keep an eye on such things and allow those videos to stay up and be traded is not only problematic but scary. Makes us question the entire concept of cyber security.
