International Day Of Women Judges: Supreme Court Of India To Hold A Virtual Celebration

March 10 is celebrated as International Day of Women Judges. And the Supreme Court of India will commemorate the first-ever celebration of International Day of Women Judges. The Supreme Court Registry has organised a special virtual programme on this occasion. The event which is being held online will begin at 5 pm. The Chief Justice of India, N.V. Ramana had directed the Supreme Court to celebrate this day. Several Hon’ble Judges of the Supreme Court including Justices Indira Banerjee, Hima Kohli, B. V. Nagarathna and Bela M. Trivedi, will be participating in this event.

The Supreme Court of India has shared a press release regarding the same. “The online programme will commence at 5 pm. All the women Hon’ble Judges of the Constitutional Courts and all the women Judicial Officers from across the country are invited to join the programme, online,” read the press release.

What Is International Day Of Women Judges?

In April 2021, a United Nations General Assembly resolution proclaimed March 10 to be celebrated as International Day of Women Judges. Historically, the female representation in the judiciary has been unequal and this needs to change. this is why the UN General Assembly called upon the member states to observe this day ‘in order to promote the full and equal participation of women at all levels of the judiciary’. The State of Qatar drafted this resolution in a bid to bring a positive change in the society in terms of equality in the judiciary system and make it inclusive.

What Is The Significance Of International Day Of Women Judges?

Goal 5 of UN’s Sustainable Development is gender equality and empowerment of women and girls. Achieving progress in these goals will allow the UN to add a gender perspective to the implementation of the 2030 Agenda. And the equal representation of women in the judicial system is one way of furthering their goal.
