Sudha Murthy Touched The Feet Of Sambhaji Rao Bhide, Man Who Refused To Speak To Reporter Not Wearing Bindi. Why Entertain Such Misogynist Men?

I personally don’t understand the point of adhering to a lot of the older traditions that are lost on me. Now I am not saying that we shouldn’t prioritise our culture. Obviously, there are many aspects of our culture which I find beautiful. And one of them is the gesture of touching feet as a show of respect. There are a lot of beautiful interpretations of the gesture. However, how many people actually deserve this gesture? Does everyone who is old or in higher positions deserve to have their feet touched? Sudha Murthy sure seems to think so as she is now getting flack for touching the feet of former RSS leader Sambhaji Rao Bhide, the man who refused to speak to a female reporter because she wasn’t wearing a bindi.

Pictures show Sambhaji Rao Bhide blessing Sudha Murthy, the wife of Infosys founder Narayana Murthy and the mother-in-law of British Prime Minister Rishi Sunak. Bhide was one of the guys arrested for inciting violence during the Bhima Koregaon incidents in 2018 by igniting stone-throwing. On November 2, Bhide caused a commotion when he refused to talk to a female television news reporter because she had not put a “bindi” on her forehead. The incident was caught on camera and led to the state women’s commission issuing him a notice.

Is this still a tradition of greeting the members of Royal family in India?
Or was it more like an action out of reverence or respect? pic.twitter.com/1xSedjLXXB

Earlier this year, Sudha Murthy also got flack for bowing before Pramoda Devi Wadiyar who is a member of the Mysuru Royal family. People didn’t understand her display of respect for an institution that is clearly outdated.

Sudha Murthy has been an inspiration to women all around India for her achievements. And it is a shame that someone who is considered to be one of the most iconic feminist figures of our times is giving respect and entertaining men like Sambhaji Rao Bhide who have openly been patriarchal and misogynistic. And if this is what the female public figures of our country are doing, what can be expected from the men?
