Sona Mohapatra Got Slut Shamed For Pics Of Her In A Swimsuit. It’s Almost 2020 And We Continue To Moral Police Our Women

I would like to believe that I am a liberal person. Even though I have grown up in an era when even wearing a short skirt was frowned upon, I am glad to have evolved. I am also glad my family has evolved and I don’t have to rebel to be able to wear or do what I want. However, I am not oblivious to the fact that a large number of people are still orthodox and don’t make it easy for a liberal any woman to live her life. Live and let live is a philosophy that’s lost on them. It’s one thing to not believe in some things and another to pull someone down who does. Celebrities are often subjected to heavy trolling from people who feel it’s their full-time job and responsibility to police them. Recently, Sona Mohapatra got slut shamed for wearing a swimsuit and while doing that, India exhibited its sexism vehemently.

Sona Mohapatra shared a couple of pictures of her in a black cutout monokini and wrote, “Wild & Wanton. 2020, here I come.” Trolls desperately looking for an opportunity to pull a woman down rubbed their hands with glee. Several filthy minds lashed out at her, slut shaming her and ridiculing her effort in the #MeToo movement. A user wrote, “These kind of pics in social media won’t help u in metoo movement. It’s contradictory. As per my opinion.” An opinion the user should’ve shoved into his backside.

Some people said they were disappointed to see a “serious” person put up pictures in a swimsuit. A lot of people body shamed her and asked her to reduce weight. But we’ve known Sona to never back down. So she shared more of her swimsuit pictures and wrote, . “I shared some last evening & ppl wrote in saying ‘wearing slut clothes & then saying #MeToo ?!’. Some felt let down, ‘thought you were a serious person?!’. Many sent (heart emoji) and (fire emoji). I refuse to fit in to any box, just like I refuse to suck in my well earned belly.2020 here I Come!”

What was even more disappointing was that Sapna Bhavnani, who I thought was a woman who believed in living life according to her own terms also joined in the whole slut-shaming. Without taking any names she wrote, “tired of women posing in skimpy clothes and thinking its #feminism” she also said she wanted to “see some new perspectives” in 2020.

Sona Mohapatra tweeted to Sapna Bhavnani saying, “Maybe so in the place you come from & had the privilege to grow up in Sapna. It is not so ‘liberal’ in most parts of our country & the world in fact. So let people do their thing. You do yours. Running down others, women & their acts of defiance, saying ‘sh*t’ doesn’t befit you.” Then things began to get downright ugly when Sapna claimed she wasn’t talking about Sona and called her a hypocrite and a womansplainer and a lot other things. Civil way of speaking seems to be missing from her CV. Sona on the other hand ended the debate by wishing her more “sense” in 2020.

It’s really not just the men that are out there slut-shaming women; other women are doing it too. Yes, while some of us are trying hard to break stereotypes and struggling with gender-bias, these women existing among us are not so supportive of their own tribe. A woman is not defined by her clothes. Wearing a swimsuit doesn’t make you a slut or not “serious” in life.
