Women Record Iconic Victory And Double Participation In Punjab Assembly Elections But It’s Still Work In Progress

As we all know, we live in a male-dominated world. Even though we have many amazing women who are working hard to prove that hum kisi se kum nahi, women’s representation in many important fields is considerably low. Recently, 13 women politicians won in the Punjab Assembly elections which doubled the representation of women from the last year. This is a step forward but we still have a long way to go. I believe we can do better than this.

On March 10, Election Commission announced the final result of Assembly Elections 2022 that happened in 5 states including Uttar Pradesh, Manipur, Uttarakhand, Goa, and Punjab. In Punjab, 13 women candidates were elected which is remarkable because last year there were only six women candidates. Out of the 13 winning candidates, 11 politicians were from Aam Aadmi Party who won the elections with flying colours. According to the reports, a total of 93 participated in the election. The numbers are quite low and we believe our nation can do much better than this but then again, it’s all about taking baby steps.

Talking about the winners, let’s take a look at all the elected candidates. Jeevan Jyot Kaur of the Aam Aadmi Party won against the veteran politicians Navjot Singh Sidhu and Bikram Singh Majithia.

The 11 AAP candidates who won the election include Santosh Kumar Kataria, Sarvjit Kaur Manuke, Rajinder Pal Kaur, Baljit Kaur, Dr Amandeep Kaur Arora, Inderjit Kaur, Neena Mittal, Narinder Kaur Bharaj, Baljinder Kaur, and Anmol Gagan Mann, Narinder Kaur Bharaj.

FYI, the total number of women politicians in Punjab Vidhan Sabha was just five two decades ago. After that, it increased to 7 politicians in 2007. In 2012, the participation of women in the Punjab Assembly was 14 which was an outstanding number but it sadly came down to just six in the year 2017.

Now, the number has surely increased but it is still low and we need to take some major action so more women can participate in the elections. The representation of women is extremely important in politics because we cannot have just men running the nation. Moreover, having more female representation will help to solve the issues and crimes that affect women majorly in our country
