Digital Mandap And NFT Shagun, Pune-Based Couple Had A Blockchain Wedding. What An Idea?

Weddings have shrunk to smaller, intimate affairs, all thanks to covid-19. Owing to the home-alone set-up, the past two years have witnessed a rise in virtual mandaps with baraatis celebrating the happy day in zoom call boxes. But this new style of a wedding hosted by a Pune based couple has taken the internet by storm. Anil Narasipuram and Shruti Nair took their nuptial vows on Blockchain. Using the boon of metaverse that has come upon us in the past few years, the couple became probably the first one to have a shaadi like this.

In presence of a digital priest called Anoop Pakki, the two got married in November 2021 using an Ethereum smart contract that dedicated their commitment to each other in the form of an NFT. The couple also created a non-fungible token or NFT with a photo of the bride’s engagement ring. With their vows embedded in the image, read as “We won’t make any big promises, but we will do everything we can to make this work. Through all our disagreement and conflict, we hope to grow our understanding of each other and ourselves. We don’t expect to be the whole village for each other, but we will be by each other’s side, hand in hand, walking through this adventure, together.”

Groom Narasipuram also shared in his post on LinkedIn, “we completed the transaction in a 15-minute ceremony officiated by the Anoop. We read out the vows and after receiving the blessings of our digital priest, I confirmed the transaction to transfer the NFT to my wife’s digital wallet.” That means even shaadi shagun goes digital, what an idea!

However, the couple has surely become the first in India to perform a Blockchain style wedding, the concept has become a popular mode in the west with many couples opting for virtual weddings, NFT vows and even digital rings. And with the growing popularity of metaverse, many couples in India like Dinesh S P and Janaganandhini Ramaswamy from Tamil Nadu, who recently announced a Hogwarts-themed wedding reception in the metaverse, are stealing the spotlight. This makes us all the more excited to know what the world of technology has in store for us, which makes Indian weddings look so creative and hassle-free too.
