Hermès’ Infamous Birkin Bag Gets A Metaverse Twist. Is The Future Of Fashion Virtual?

Hermès’ Infamous Birkin Bag Gets A Metaverse Twist. Is The Future Of Fashion Virtual?

Sharing the planet with a section that is being served with a virtual luxury bag while I haven’t got my hands on the physical one yet, the world is evolving in patches followed by different timelines, where fashion meets the future. Yes, you heard me right! The world of fashion is soaring high and applauding this new hi-tech piece of accessory, breathing in the metaverse. In an attempt to discourage the trade of products made using fur, digital designer Mason Rothschild has put his creative head to curate 100 versions of the infamous Hermès Birkin Bag as Non-Fungible Tokens, or NFTs, to embrace ethical alternative textiles (which in reality isn’t even a textile). Entering the universe that still feels like a tenth-grade chapter of Math to many, the fashion rocket has landed in the meta-universe, and here we are, still figuring out the menu for lunch.

Followed by the success of the artist’s last hit the Baby Birkins, the series takes its inspiration from Hermès’ most famous handbag ‘Birkin.’ The infamous bag is one amongst luxury fashion’s most exclusive bags, with a never-ending waitlist that makes it the most wanted piece in the market. Introduced in early December of 2021, the invention is a part of the meta fashion wardrobe, which is the future we’re not ready for. Selling a version of the ‘it’ bag on an invite-only shopping platform called Basic Space, the designer attempts to put his stakes in digital fashion, propagating the idea of alternative textile options which in this case is fur pixels. Expensive is it? If that’s the question beating your head, then the answer is yes. Being sold at a price range between 0.3 Ethereum (the currency used for purchasing) to 249 Ethereum, the over $3000 per coin tag squeezes the infamous creation in the digital luxury category, which is giving the original Birkins by Hermès a run for its money.

And after reading all of this, if you’re still wondering that you’d get the physical bag in return for the sky-high price, then dear readers we welcome you to the future. Escalating a notch much higher, brands and digital designers have made an official entry into the world of computerized wardrobes. Much like an Instagram filter, names like Dress X are serving fashion on a platter for an audience that is looking for tech garments made of pixels, not fabric. Tailormade and well-suited to the buyer’s needs, computerized clothing is making its way into the common world with products ranging from sneakers to dresses (I mean how fascinating is that). With the motto of “don’t buy less” the idea of sustainable fashion is what the metaverse is thriving on.

Bringing the ‘dress your barbie doll’ computer games to life, the eccentric market is approaching faster than ever. Available for the section that has mastered the concept of NFTs ( another mind-boggling name) the idea of stacking a digital wardrobe is still a far-fetched dream, with many still being happy with their ‘tangible’ pair of pyjamas.
