People Are Congratulating Adele On Her Weight Loss. It’s Great For Her Health But That’s Not The Only Thing That Matters

I remember the first time I heard Adele singing Rolling in the deep on a channel, her voice strong and powerful, literally resonating with the deepest parts of my brain, as she instantly became one of my most favourite artists in the industry. With a certain kind of a passion and enigma attached to her being, in no time did we see Adele turn into this global singing sensation that made us want to listen to her songs on a loop, and we did. And while her weight was a complete non-issue (I didn’t even realise it was a bone of contention till I was writing this article) for me, turns out a lot of people were worried about her.

You see, not coming off from the conventional beauty standards set by the society, not just Indian but also otherwise, Adele had always been regarded as, for the lack of a better word here, a large woman. Not like being large or petite had any bearing on how wonderful a singer she is, but the world  measures you in those terms, and so Adele was dismissed as a woman with a great voice but one who is fat. A narrative that recently saw a shift, after the Grammy award winner posted a picture of herself on her birthday, looking like an absolute snacc, like she has before, and having lost a considerable amount of weight.

Putting up a picture of herself in a little black dress, standing in front of a flower wreath, with the caption, “Thank you for the birthday love. I hope you’re all staying safe and sane during this crazy time. I’d like to thank all of our first responders and essential workers who are keeping us safe while risking their lives! You are truly our angels. 2020, okay bye thanks x,” Adele took the internet by storm with her birthday post.

Having surprised everyone with her transformation, the world couldn’t help but congratulate her on her drastic weight loss and we think as much as positive it may seem, it was a subtle act of fat shaming, yet again.

And we may not be the only ones suggesting that. There have been a number of people who have raised concern over how we are viewing Adele’s weight loss journey. Celebrating someone like her on her weight loss, when she herself hasn’t mentioned of it, is all but a way of insinuating how the world values you more when you are slimmer and fit into the conventional body types. And the fact that hundreds of her fans have bombarded her comment section on Instagram, less with birthday wishes and more with a congratulatory wishes on losing a few pounds, shows exactly where our mentality may lie.

Don’t get us wrong here, we still think and respect that as a personal choice coming from Adele, considering there have been times in the past when she has been compared to Princess Fiona from Shrek, but has shut down trolls about her body weight, owning up to her size and how. So now, that she has chosen to lose weight, we feel it’s good for her, as long as it was for health and fitness and not out of societal pressure.

People need to start accepting others for how they are, and stop the need to project their own insecurities or rather beliefs on other people by body or fat shaming them. Because for us, with or without that weight, she was a star and always will be. And that is the only sentiment that we must have and that is important to remember.
