Polycystic Ovary Syndrome, or PCOS, causes massive hormonal changes and imbalances in women. This can cause overproduction of eggs which can cause the formulation of cysts. These can latch onto the ovaries permanently and cause various massive changes in the body, making it harder for us to work on it and of course, deal with it.

This syndrome also results in various problems including a rise in testosterone which can cause irregular hair growth, acne and weight gain which makes you open to ridicule for not being ‘feminine’ enough. In fact, it can also be seriously harmful and cause excessively unbearable menstrual cramps and even, infertility. This is what makes it harder to talk about in a public space, the layer of stigma that it brings with itself makes society judge you, feel sorry for you and of course, ‘worry’ about you.

It’s a fact that Sonam Kapoor had to lose a lot of weight before she got to make her debut in Saawariya. The now pregnant actor has been vocal about suffering form PCOS and having body image issues. She recently disclosed the fact that she broke up with her school boyfriend because he disliked the way she looked. She explained, “I gained around 35 kg in a span of 5-6 months. Hair started growing in all the weird places and I had acne too. During that time, I just didn’t feel good about myself.”

Kareena Kapoor has always been blunt when it comes to talking about social issues. So, it was no surprise that she dared to speak up about her battle with PCOS and also left some great tips to motivate other women. She believes that, “Sleep, stress management, regular exercise and proper diet – these are key ingredients to your health while dealing with PCOS. Also, calcium and vitamin B12 help in providing relief during period cramps.”

We can’t talk about it, because of the stigma attached to it and lack of awareness. There are many women like me, grappling with mood swings, weight gain, excess hair, hair loss, pimples and a lot more, that comes with the territory. Every month is a battle.”

4. Sara Ali Khan

Sara Ali Khan has always been in the limelight because of her celebrity lineage. She publicly spoke about her battle and how she had to work hard on being thin because it mattered for her public image. She had to diet excessively and work out like a maniac to stay on top of her medical condition. She dared to make her story public on Koffee with Karan and inspired millions.
