A 66-Yr-Old Man Married And Defrauded 27 Women From 10 States, Arrested By Odisha Police

I’ve always enjoyed watching conman movies as their storylines are like no other movies. But very recently I came across a story of a real conman who married and defrauded 27 women from 10 states in India. Yep, you read that right and no, he is no Don Juan. So wondering how he pulled it off? Well, he used the oldest trick in the book – he targeted women above 40 and fed off their insecurities. Odisha police arrested a man for marrying and defrauding 27 women, who also happens to be Odisha’s biggest imposter.

On February 13th, 2022, a 66-year-old Bibhu Prakash Swain was arrested by a special squad of Odisha police that had been tracking the man for the last eight months. When the man got down from the rented vehicle he was travelling in, he flashed the police a weak smile and surrendered himself.

After Bibhu Prakash Swain’s interrogation, Odisha police confirmed that he was one of the biggest imposters they had come across. They also revealed that he had married a minimum of 27 women from 10 different states, defrauded 13 banks in Kerala of ₹1 crore using 128 forged credit cards in 2006, and also cheated people back in Hyderabad of ₹2 crores by promising seats in MBA courses for children.

The Odisha police arrested him based on the complaint of one of his wives in May 2021. The complaint against the conman was filed under sections 498 (A), 419, 468, 471, and 494 of the Indian Penal Code. Needless to say, Bibhu Swain was reprimanded to judicial custody in Bhubaneswar.

According to the police, the conman found his victims through matrimonial sites and fed on their insecurities. He targeted women who were above 40 years of age, helpless, and were desperate to get married because of societal pressure. Umashankar Dash, Deputy Commissioner of Police, Bhubaneswar, said, “ Though he looked more than 60 in real life, his victims ignored it while considering his government job. Swain took full advantage of the women’s helplessness and laid elaborate traps… Though we are yet to know how much money he made out of the victims, initial assessments say he collected ₹2-10 lakh from his victims. His motive was to marry for money.”

As per reports, while going through his phone, the police found many numbers of women saved as ‘wife one’, ‘wife doctor’, ‘wife Bhilai’, ‘wife teacher’, ‘wife Guwahati’, ‘wife Bangalore’, ‘to be wife Dhenkanal’, and ‘to be wife Jagatsinghpur’ in his contacts. Swain would take money from the woman’s family in the form of cash and gold jewellry.

When the police spoke to Swain’s family they were shocked and could not believe it. His stepmother said that he had come to visit them around six months ago but did not mention his scams. She further added that it was not a surprise that he didn’t tell them about it as he never cared for them.

A senior police officer of Odisha working on the case said, “It was surely not a one-man show and he parked his loot with his wife and different people over the years. From his chat transcripts and other evidence, we have found out that he was in touch with 70-75 other women whom he could have married over the next few years.” It seems as though he ran multiple scandals other than just marrying women and stealing their money.

Taking advantage of women who are pressured by society to get married or are shamed for not being married have become victims of this cruel man. I feel as though when we stop putting this pressure on them will they be safe from such brutal tactics of such conmen.
