Gurgaon Appoints Kala Ramachandran As First Woman Police Commissioner. We Expect Great Things!

For the longest time, women haven’t been given respectable and higher positions in a lot of avenues because they have lived in the shadows of men. Women have been underestimated and deprived of a lot of opportunities, thanks to the patriarchal society we live in. However, we have definitely made some headway over the past few years as women have had a lot of momentous firsts. One of them happened recently with Gurgaon appointing Kala Ramachandran, its first woman police commissioner.

Gurgaon has finally appointed Kala Ramachandran as their first woman police commissioner who will be taking charge from February 15 i.e. today. Ramachandran is a 1994 IPS (Indian Police Service) officer. She will be taking the place of K K Rao after he was transferred effective immediately late on Saturday. Ramachandran was earlier the Principal Secretary to the Haryana government’s Transport Department along with the charge of ADGP State Vigilance Bureau. She is the first woman officer of Gurgaon since the commissioner system was introduced in the city in 2007.

Ramachandran said in an interview, “Gurgaon being a city with diverse milieu, from rural to corporate to industrial to urban residential, the focus will be on facilitation of ease of doing business and to make life easier for everyone. The focus of the police should be on improving the lives of common citizens.” She also said that she will be prioritising women’s safety and traffic problems. “One thing that affects everyone is traffic. The security of citizens from street crimes such as hooliganism, snatchings, eve-teasing and drunken driving, and security of women and minors would remain a key priority. Women should be safe and that’s the sign of a mature society also that women can go out of the house without fear. We will also focus on economic offences and cybercrimes,” said Ramachandran.
