Female Lawmakers Are More Than Males In New Zealand’s Parliament For The First Time. India Mei Kab Aaega Ye Din?

Women in politics always serve as an inspiration! From the portfolios they hold to the struggle they have to go through to reach the position they are currently, all of it makes them solid role models. From India, I highly looked up to the late Sushma Swaraj for the kind of work she did and her fierceness! But on the international front, if you ask me to name one female politician who I really admire, I will unhesitantly name Jacinda Ardern, the Prime Minister of New Zealand. I love how she handled the covid situation in her country and also the shootings in Christchurch city in New Zealand. And now what comes as a piece of great news about the lawmakers in the country, it has been revealed that female lawmakers are in majority over males.

As per reports, Soraya Peke-Mason, who is a liberal Labour Party member, has been sworn in as the speaker. She replaced Trevor Mallard who is now the ambassador to Ireland. Not just him, another male lawmaker resigned, and now the number of female lawmakers in the country stands at 60 while that of the male stands at 59! Isn’t this good news?

This female-to-male lawmakers ratio now puts New Zealand on the list of those few nations around the world that proudly claim to have 50 per cent female representation in the parliament. Apart from this country, others who find themselves on the list are Rwanda, United Arab Emirates, Cuba and Mexico. If you take a look at the global numbers, the Inter-Parliamentary Union states that 26 per cent of lawmakers are women.

Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern was concerned about the condition of women in other countries. She said that as the women in her country are stepping forward, it feels like the women in other nations are sliding backwards on the progress scale. I think she was referring to the condition of women in Iran.

We are glad to see the New Zealand parliament have a higher number of female lawmakers. Having a female perspective is important in matters of national security and finances! I wonder when will India reach equality in this department.
