Miss World 2021 Postponed As More Contestants Test Positive, Including India’s Manasa Varanasi

While many of us might be going through our lives fully vaccinated and trying to hold on to some semblance of normalcy after the lockdown, I think we are forgetting that the pandemic is still going on and affecting the lives of many. I see people not wearing masks in public spaces, roaming around like Covid is not a thing anymore. Many important events are now being conducted and while there are protocols in place, clearly they aren’t enough. This can be seen as Miss World had to temporarily postpone their pageant after the contestants, including India’s Manasa Varanasi, were tested positive for Covid.

The finale was going to be taken place in Puerto Rico on Thursday, has now will be rescheduled within the next 90 days. The pageant officials took to social media and said, “After meeting with the virologists and medical experts hired to oversee the Miss World 2021 event and discussing with the Puerto Rico Health Department, the decision has been made by the organizers of the event to postpone the globally broadcast finale at the Puerto Rico Coliseum Jose Miguel Agrelot to be held within the next 90 days.”

The announcement also mentioned extra safety measures being taken for the contestants and crews’ safety. The decision was made after consulting health officials and experts. The statement read, “The next step according to the medical experts is immediate quarantine, pending observation and further testing according to best practices in situations like this.” The contestants and staff will reportedly be sent back to their home countries after they are cleared by health officials and experts.

While I am happy that the right measures are being taken to curb the spread of the virus and ensure everyone’s safety, I just feel a tad bit bad for the contestants. Regardless of what people believe, preparing for pageants such as Miss India and Miss World is a lot of hard work. I really hope that everyone involved gets their due when they are finally past this.
