Michelle Obama Reacts To Meghan Markle’s Interview, Says She Is “Not Surprised”.

Almost a week ago, the entire world was taken by surprise and shock when Meghan Markle and Prince Harry sat down to have a heart to heart with American chat show host, Oprah Winfrey. Dropping truth bombs about their life with the Royal family, a lot of issues were raised, controversies were stirred up and a lot of skeletons came tumbling out of the closet when they talked about the time that they spent in the royal “institution”, most of which, they alleged, was laden with prejudice, pressure and depression.

The Duchess of Sussex, Meghan Markle along with Prince Harry went on to share a lot about her mental state and the kind of environment that the two were exposed to. Admitting on national TV that she was suicidal at one point during her time in Britain, Meghan also spoke about a person who passed racist and misogynistic remarks about her and her son, Archie, who was denied a title.

And while the list of explosive revelations from the two hour long interview were many, the conversation about race and colour seemed to have opened a larger dialogue. One that was recently acknowledged by former First Lady of the United States of America, Michelle Obama.

Giving her two cents on the matter, Michelle said, “I feel like that was heartbreaking to hear, that she felt like she was in her own family — her own family thought differently of her.” A sentiment that arose in almost everyone who watched the tell-all interview with Oprah Winfrey.

Michelle went on to say, “As I said before, race isn’t a new construct in this world for people of colour, and so it wasn’t a complete surprise to hear her feelings and to have them articulated.” This coming from a woman of colour herself, who has had her own share of struggle and experienced racism even during her time as the First Lady of the United States of America. Once even when her family was buying ice cream at the Central Park, trying to mix with the crowd, when she was cut in the line by a white woman, who pretended she didn’t even see her, Michelle said.

Michelle said, “I think the thing that I hope for, and the thing I think about, is that this, first and foremost, is a family. I pray for forgiveness and healing for them so that they can use this as a teachable moment for us all.” The controversy that is being regarded as the biggest crisis to be faced by the Royal Family since the death of Harry’s mother Diana 1997, has created quite an uproar.

Although, the Queen Elizabeth has admitted to be disheartened after listening to Prince Harry and Meghan’s woes in the Royal family, she has promised to address the issues, especially that of her grandson being subject to racism, but privately. We are yet to find out if the word would be made good on, but for now, the fact that powerful women like Michelle Obama are also speaking up the persistent racism in the culture across borders, is pretty telling of how it needs to be addressed on a much larger scale.
