Who is Margaret Alva, The Opposition’s Vice Presidential Candidate?

Margaret Alva is a beloved politician from Congress. She is the Ex-Union Minister and a renowned four-time governor under Congress. She has been declared the Opposition’s choice for the Vice Presidential Post of India. Veteran political leader Sharad Pawar made the announcement on Sunday afternoon. Meanwhile, the NDA has chosen Jagdeep Dhankhar, i.e. the former Governer of Bengal, to be their nomination for the same post.

Shortly after the announcement, Margaret Alva took to Twitter to thank the masses for the privilege, she thanked everyone for their faith in her as a political leader.

Who Is Margaret Alva?

She has been closely working with Sonia Gandhi for almost all of her career. Her work as the Governor of Goa has been much appreciated. And she managed to recreate the same during her tenure in Gujarat, Rajasthan, and Uttarakhand. She is a five-time parliamentarian and has also served as the Cabinet Minister in the government headed by Rajiv Gandhi. She has been close to the Gandhi family for a while now.

This raises a question, has this decision been made to award her loyalty or is it a smart move to pick a woman from the minority to take the power position? Is this taking a step back towards the time of Congress rule?

Other political leaders from Congress also took to social media to congratulate her on her well-deserved achievement. She has been distinguished and appreciated for her strong stances in the past.

“Our candidate is from the minority and is better than their candidate. If they will support our candidate (Margaret Alva), then it will be a unanimous poll,” the leader of the Opposition in the Rajya Sabha was quoted as saying by a news agency told ANI.

While Mr Jairam Ramesh took to Twitter to support Margaret Alva and her selection as the opposition’s candidate for Vice President.

The term of Vice-President Venkaiah Naidu, who won the election in 2017 ends on August 10, 2022, and that’s when we will have the final verdict from the elections. The Vice-Presidential polls will be held on August 6, 2022, which is scheduled to occur a few days after the ongoing Presidential election.

Do you think Margaret Alva deserves to be given the second most honourable position in parliament? Whom do you think will take the seat this time?
