6 People Detained In Connection To The Murder And Rape Of Dalit Sisters In UP

As a woman, I sometimes find it anxiety-inducing to watch/listen to/read the news. Think about it. Literally, every other crime story is about women getting raped or killed or worse, both. And the absolute lack of care our lawmakers have for this dire situation infuriates me further. Recently, 2 young girls’ bodies were found hanging from a tree in Uttar Pradesh and the news has arrived that 6 people have been arrested as suspects in the rape and murder of the two girls.

Six people were detained on Thursday in connection with the suspected rape and murder of the two young Dalit sisters in the Lakhimpur Kheri region of Uttar Pradesh on Wednesday, according to police. According to Lakhimpur Kheri police superintendent Sanjiv Suman, an overnight operation resulted in the detention of Junaid, Sohail, Hafizur Rehman, Karimuddin, Arif, and Chottu. He added that the sisters and Junaid and Sohail were romantically involved.

Suman claimed that the two sisters fled their home on Wednesday afternoon after being convinced to do so by Junaid and Sohail, citing a preliminary investigation. Sources say Junaid and Sohail have admitted that they raped the sisters first, then strangled them. The girls’ mother said on Wednesday that three guys from a nearby village kidnapped the 15 and 17-year-old children on a bike. Their bodies were discovered in a sugarcane field about two hours later, tied with a scarf from a tree a kilometre away. Locals blocked a highway and demanded that the accused face the harshest punishment.

The protesting residents and their families were guaranteed the harshest police actions by Suman and assistant police superintendent Arun Kumar Singh. Laxmi Singh, the inspector general of police for the Lucknow region also arrived at Lakhimpur Kheri. Between August and September 2020, the Lakhimpur Kheri witnessed the rape and murder of three young girls.
