Kerala High Court Permits Christian Woman And Muslim Man To Marry, Says ‘She Can Take Her Own Decisions’

Indian parents are typically not comfortable with the idea of their children having a relationship at all, let alone a relationship with someone from a different caste or faith. One such case has taken place and the matter has reached the Kerala High Court! This case is of Joisna Mary Joseph and Democratic Youth Federation of India (DYFI) leader Shejin. Josina’s father has filed a habeas corpus petition which seeks the appearance of a particular person in the court. Josina is of Christian faith and Shejin of Muslim. She and Shejin got married by exchanging garlands and their union has triggered a controversy surrounding love jihad.
Kerala High Court allows Josina And Shejin’s Marriage
According to a report by The Print, the Kerala High Court allowed Josina to go with Shejin after she told the court that she was not forcibly getting married to Shejin and their relationship was consensual. Josina’s father had filed a complaint citing that his daughter was kept under illegal detention.
As per a report by The News Minute, on Saturday, Josina appeared before the bench of Justices VG Arun and CS Sudha. Her father told the bench that she and Shejin were likely to leave the country as well. The judges also passed the verdict that the couple can get married under the Special Marriage Act. Josina had come from Saudi Arabia to get engaged to another man but in the end, got married to Shejin.

Josina and Shejin’s marriage also caught the eye after a CPI(M) leader stated that the couple’s marriage is love jihad. This matter turned into a controversy after CPI(M) Kozhikode district secretariat member George M Thomas said that the party will take action against Shejin for “disrupting the communal harmony” between Muslims and Christians by getting married to Josina.
