Who Is Jeevan Jyot Kaur, Amritsar’s Pad Woman Who Won Against Sidhu And Majithia In Punjab Election
While most people were waiting for either of the two political giants: Navjot Sidhu and Singh Majithia to win the Punjab elections Aam Aadmi Party’s Jeevan Jyot Kaur won the elections. In a surprising yet well-deserved victory, Jeevan Jyot Kaur, also known as the pad woman, won against two strong and well-known opponents by a margin of 6,750 votes against Sidhu.
Navjot Sidhu is the chief of Punjab congress and Majithia is SAD’s General of the Majha region and also the brother-in-law of the party’s chief Sukhbir Badal. Hence it comes as a surprise to many that Jeevan Jyot Kaur got a total of 39,679 votes while Sidhu got 32,929 and Majithia got 25,188.

Jeevan Jyot Kaur is the AAP Party’s district president for urban Amritsar. She got the name of the pad woman of Amritsar due to her work in women’s menstrual awareness and health. Kaur is the president of the S.H.E. Society that aims to create awareness regarding plastic sanitary pads made of plastic and distributes reusable ones. She also collaborated with a Swiss-based company to distribute reusable pads.

While not having the same national visibility as Sidhu and Majithia, Kaur had the goodwill of the people as a common person who joined politics and won. She earned a lot of praise for her work with the Sri Hemkunt Education Society and also worked with the coShe Menstrual Health Programme that looks over the distribution of eco-friendly sanitary napkins. This got her the name, “pad woman of Punjab”, according to The Week.

An AAP functionary that worked closely with Jeevan Jyot Kaur said according to The Quint, “These two leaders (Sidhu and Majithia) in different ways represent all that’s wrong with Punjab politics. Sidhu didn’t do anything in the seat, Majithia has allegations against him. We didn’t want their personality contest to divert from real issues.” The functionary further said that the party plans to focus on genuine problems faced by the people such as lack of proper sanitation, healthcare and civic infrastructure.
