Study Says Indian Men On Matrimonial Sites Don’t Prefer Working Women As Partners. Such Surprise, Much Wow

Once you turn 25, your parents and relatives begin initiating marriage conversations with you, right? I know this holds true because I have experienced this. Your biodata is shared on matrimonial sites and the news that are eligible for marriage, spreads like wildfire, doesn’t it? Given the modern times we are living in, our parents have also come to understand the importance of working and being financially independent. So, naturally, when your parents are finding a match for us, they, too, will find someone who is okay with you having a job. But the latest study says otherwise. A study conducted by Diva Dhar, a researcher at the University of Oxford’s Blavatnik School of Government has shown that women who do not work are preferred by men on matrimonial sites.

As per a report in The Times Of India, Diva Dhar hypothesised that working women are not preferred by men. In her experiment, she also found out that men show 15-22 per cent more interest in those women who are not working. Dhar said that she wanted that when it came to marriage, she wanted to see how gender roles affected working women.

How she conducted this experiment is quite interesting! Diva Dhar made 20 fake profiles on popular matrimonial sites and then went on to select suitors who met her research eligibility criteria. What she learned from this experiment is that men first respond to those women who say they are not working and then second, they respond to those women who say that they are willing to leave their jobs.

But, Diva also found an interesting thing from the study that if at all, men on these sites prefer women who are working, they would want her to have a high income. But at the same time, 10 per cent of men will again prefer women who earn more than them and 15 per cent of men will not respond to those women earning less than them.

The customisation that these men want is so annoying, to be honest. The logic behind these customised preferences also makes no sense.
