Journalist Rana Ayyub’s Twitter Account Withheld In India Under Information Technology Act, 2000

Indian journalist Rana Ayyub is known for her outstanding journalistic skills and has also been a very active user of her social media sites. She avidly uses them to put forth her views on different issues of the country and world. However, in a tweet made by Ms. Ayyub, the journalist shared an email from Twitter which was a notice for her account being withheld in India in conformity with some legal laws of the country.

On Sunday, journalist Rana Ayyub posted a notice from Twitter informing her that her Twitter site had been suspended in India under the Information Technology Act, 2000. The Twitter notice that Ms. Ayyub shared mentioned that in order to conform to the local laws in India, the social media site had decided to “withhold” the journalist’s account under the Information Technology Act 2000. It further said that her content will remain available in other places. The notice further read –As Twitter strongly believes in defending and respecting the voice of the people who use our service, it is our policy to notify account holders if we receive a legal request from an authorized entity (such as law enforcement or a government agency) to remove content from their account. We provide notice whether or not the user lives in the country where the request originated.” Sharing this mail, Rana Ayyub also put forth a question to Twitter India which read- “Hello Twitter, what exactly is this?”

Many Twitter users commented on this. Even Martina Navaratolina, a tennis legend, stated, “So, who’s next? Just terrible…”. In her post, she also tagged Rana Ayyub and Twitter.

Also reacting to Rana Ayyub’s tweet, Former Prasar Bharati CEO Shashi Shekhar Vempati stated that the Twitter notice could just be a bug. Mr. Vempati too had received a similar notice from  Twitter last year.
