In Delhi, This Man Was Arrested For Catfishing And Blackmailing Young Girls On Social Media

Even though I am not an avid user, I depend on social media for entertainment and work as much as the next millennial. Like most people my age, I cherish the hours I spend mindlessly scrolling through memes and reels. We wouldn’t have been able to get through this lockdown without it. Although, even I can’t deny that social media is a curse as much as it is a boon. You see, it provides a certain anonymity to its users allowing them to not only cyberbully and send lecherous messages (have you ever seen your ‘request’ section?) but also catfish and blackmail. Obviously, not everyone misuses social media but the ones who do, deserve to be put behind bars. Just like this man from Delhi was after he confessed to catfishing and extorting money from women.

21-year-old Amir, a barber originally from Bijnaur, Uttar Pradesh posed as a rich businessman on social media and befriended numerous women. He would then start fake relationships with them and lure them into sending him their private pictures. He would use these pictures to blackmail and extort money from these women. He would target young girls and women. One of his victims is a 13-year-old girl and she was the one who blew the whistle on his entire operation.

Usually, once Amir received the pictures he would blackmail these women and demand money in exchange for his silence. Most of his victims gave in to his threats and refrained from filing an FIR and involving the police. However, when Amir began blackmailing this 13-year-old girl she promptly opened up to her father who filed a complaint with the police under the POCSO Act. The police arrested Amir and even seized his phone. He confessed to his crimes during an interrogation.

This is shameful. How a man can take advantage of women, especially one as young as 13, is beyond me. But until stronger action isn’t taken to make it impossible for men like Amir to catfish, threaten, blackmail and extort money from people on social media we need to be extra careful.
