Living Away From Home Comes With A Baggage Of Memories, Here Are Some That We Miss Dearly!

Living in a city where you know no one, becomes quite hard sometimes. Talking from my own experience, I can say that no matter how much we try and keep ourselves busy and loaded with work in the buzz of a metropolitan city, the thought and memories of home stays in the back of our minds. This void feels more when it is the weekend, at least it does for me. The fact that you are alone and not around your loved ones strikes harder during the weekends. I laze around for the whole day, talk to my mother more often on the weekends, and I will be homesick. I have my list of things that I dearly miss about home, now that I am living so far. The weekends are here and I am definitely going to think more about all of this. Also, the away-from-home feelings that were engraved in my mind and heart up until now have been listed down here for everyone who feels the same.

1. Conversations

This of course tops my list of things. The biggest con of living alone in an unknown city is that you will not have your loved ones around to talk to. Sometimes even phone calls and video calls do not help because you miss their presence. I remember during weekends, I used to stay with Ma in the kitchen and just blabbered while she continued doing her chores. And probably ignored most of what I said, but still, it was fun. Or sitting with my father and having a career talk over some chai, bliss! Now, video calls and phone calls have replaced those times and I cannot stress enough how much I miss their presence.

2. Ghar Ka Khaana

I cannot bet on other points in my list, but this one I am sure everyone away from home is definitely missing. Remember, those days when we were privileged enough to make faces at a “gobhi ki sabzi” or “tinde ki sabzi”, but now are half of the time sulking over making food? Most of us are basically spending a good portion of our salary ordering food. Especially when you are in the office and your colleagues get a home-cooked meal for lunch, Bura lagta hai, you cannot lie here! And now during weekends, you will feel this void even more. Also, do you also get some sarcastic comments from your Mom on this?

3. Sibling Love

A sibling’s love is only known to you when you start staying away from them. I have an elder brother and thanks to Covid, many bonds became stronger, as everybody was home. It was a ritual for me and my brother to watch movies together every night after getting done with our work. Honestly, it was my brother who introduced me to good cinema, and now when I live alone, watching movies has become so boring. Weekends were even more fun, in addition to movies, we used to play monopoly, and yeah watch more movies. Now, most of my weekends are dull.

4. Pets

I legit crave for my cute dog back home. When I was shifting to a new city, after my parents and sibling, saying goodbye to my pet was the hardest emotion I went through. I vividly remember the last night at home, my dog whose name BTW is Aarya, came to me and slept beside me, and that was the time when I realized how much I will miss this. In fact, she used to get more excited to see me when I returned home from anywhere, more than any other member of my family. She used to literally jump on me to lick my face, but now when I return to my PG, I miss seeing her and having her around.  While I write this, I am also waiting to just go home soon and play with her.

5. Small Town Vibe

To achieve your dreams, you eventually have to move out and live in a big city. And no matter what, you have to survive and gradually you settle down too. However, once in a while you will say, “Yaar woh shaanti chahiye” ( Need the peace). That calm and peace of a small town or city are dearly missed in the buzz and rush of a metropolitan. I wonder about this most of the time when I am free, how days back in my small city were much easier. Also, I don’t know if you have experienced this but It’s funny and ironic how sometimes people in big cities are not even aware of your city’s existence, the same place that holds so much importance and memories in your life. Well, you can only laugh it off, that’s what I do.

6. Maa

This is like another article altogether. When I said that I could bet on the Ghar ka Khana , Moms were an exceptional case. In fact, Moms are exceptional. Living away from home has made one point very clear to me and that is moms are enough, to give you the strength through every bad day. We still have long conversations over phone calls, but I honestly cannot wait to just meet her soon and maybe go over those conversations again.
