European Union Agrees On 40% Quota For Women On Corporate Boards, President Ursula Von Der Leyen Says Women Deserve It

Women are capable enough to get recognition in higher positions in the workplace. It’s high time that we get over the mentality of underestimating a gender’s capabilities or even education. While there are many women who have broken this narrow-minded and stereotypical idea and are holding top positions in a company, we still have a long way to go. However, in a step towards a similar goal, the European Commission has taken an applaudable decision, and we hope others follow the same.

The European Commission agreed to have a 40% quota for women on company boards. The Commission’s new settlement on the law would require listed companies to increase female representation in non-executive director positions to 40% by 2026. The President of the Election Commission Ursula von der Leyen has made sure to give women the due credit they deserve and also acknowledge them as equals, and that is very evident in the decision that the EU has made. On Tuesday, Ursula von der Leyer in her statement asserted that there are many women who are qualified enough to secure positions in top jobs and they should certainly get it, as stated by a news report.

The first proposal of the legislation was given by The European Union, the bloc’s executive arm in 2012, however, the formal adoption by the other 27 member states and the Parliament is expected later this year. As per an EU statement, women make up 30.6% of board members in the EU’s largest publicly listed firms. If member countries decide to apply the legislation to both executive and non-executive directors, the target would be 33% female representation. Only 9 of the 27 member states currently have national legislation governing gender equality on boards.

The authorities holding positions that can help bring change in the society and its outlook should recognise such issues and decide accordingly. Women deserve to get the recognition and these changes will rightfully allow them to have it. The EU’s decision is welcomed and appreciated.
