DMK Leader Calls Actress-Turned-BJP Leaders ‘Item’ Just Days After Court Rules The Usage Of The Term For Women As Sexual Harassment

When it comes to speaking derogatory things about other people, it is our politicians that win the game. Time and again we have seen politicians insulting other people – especially women – with their remarks and then comes the controversies. And this time around is no different. the spokesperson of DMK, Saidai Sadiq, became the hot topic and centre of a massive controversy because of the derogatory remarks he made about actors that turned BJP leaders in Tamil Nadu – BJP leader Khushbu Sundar, Namitha, Gayathri Raghuram, and Gowthami. Following his statements, the DMK MP Kanimozhi apologised for the unparliamentary comments made by Saidai Sadiq.

DMK spokesperson Saidai Sadiq made derogatory remarks about the BJP leader Khushbu Sundar and other female actors that turned into BJP leaders in Tamil Nadu – Namitha, Gayathri Raghuram, and Gowthami. He called all the four actors-turned-politicians “items”. And further said, “What do you think of yourself? Do you know how many times my brother Ilaya Aruna did Khushbu? I mean he had meetings with her when she was in DMK.”

Saidai Sadiq also claimed that his brother brought the BLP leader around six times for meetings. Following these derogatory remarks, Khushbu Sundar took to her Twitter to call him out for insulting women and also tagged the DMK MP Kanimozhi.

She further tagged DMK MP Kanimozhi and wrote, “When men abuse women, it just shows what kind of upbringing they have had and the toxic environment they were brought up in. These men insult the womb of a woman. Such men call themselves followers of Kalaignar.” In her tweet, BJP leader Khushbu Sundar even asked if insulting women was part of the “new Dravidian Model”.

After being mentioned personally in Khushbu Sundar’s tweet, DMK leader Kanimozhi wrote an apology tweet wherein she as a woman and a human being apologised for what was said. She further emphazised the fact that irrespective of the person who spoke it, this type of behaviour won’t be tolerated. She concluded it by saying she apologises on behalf of the party’s spokesperson Saidai Sadiq because she and her party don’t condone this kind of derogatory remarks.

The irony of this situation is that Saidai Sadiq’s remark wherein he calls them “items” comes right after the court passed the ruling that using that term for women is sexual harassment. Honestly. I’m personally tired of these politicians speaking whatever they want to and then someone has to apologise for them. I’m tired that they get off so easily and we as a society are tolerating this behaviour. Something concrete really needs to be done.
