The uphill battle to break gender stereotypes and provide equal opportunities for women in the defence sector is going quite strong. On Tuesday, the Defense Minster Of India Rajnath Singh made the announcement on Twitter that the women fighter pilots will be inducted into Indian Air Force on a permanent basis instead of an experimental basis. While announcing the historic decision, Rajnath Singh mentioned that the decision is a testimony to the capability of Indian women. He also highlighted the commitment of Prime Minister of India Narendra Modi towards women empowerment. The tweet read, “The MoD has decided to convert the Experimental Scheme for Induction of Women Fighter Pilots in the Indian Air Force into a permanent scheme. It is a testimony to the capability of India’s ‘Nari Shakti’ and our PM Shri @narendramodi’s commitment towards women empowerment.”

Take a look at the tweet here:

In 2015, the Defence Ministry had approved allowing women to join the Indian Air Force as fighter pilots, while the induction of women SSC officers in Fighter Stream of Flying Branch started in 2016. This news came after six long years after the Indian Air Force (IAF) began accepting women pilots on an experimental basis. The decision will open the gate of the defence sector to more women now. As of now, a total of 16 women fighter pilots has been commissioned in the Indian Air Force (IAF). Flying officer Avani Chaturvedi of the Indian Air Force made history by becoming the first Indian woman to fly a MiG-21 bison solo in the year 2018. We also witnessed Flight Lieutenant Shivangi Singh, India’s first female pilot for the Rafale fighter aircraft standing on the Air Force’s tableau during the Republic Day parade.

We believe women all over the world are meant to achieve great success in their life. From being not allowed to have basic rights and now protecting the borders of our country, Indian women have come a long way. We hope, women in India and all over the world will get much more opportunities like this to prove themselves.
