Hindi Diwas: From Mahadevi Verma To Munshi Premchand, 5 Hindi Language Authors You Need To Read At Least Once In Your Lifetime

I vividly remember looking forward to Hindi Diwas in school because it was the day when we were officially allowed to talk in Hindi throughout the day not just with friends, but with teachers, too! Oh, what a blast my friends and I would have in school on that day! But as I grew up, and inculcated the hobby of reading, I realised there are some great literary pieces written in the Hindi language as well. These books have gone on to become classics and also are considered gems. Not do these books have great stories but also the vocabulary used in them is so rich that the readers will learn new words while reading them. So, on the occasion of Hindi Diwas, here are 5 Hindi language authors whose books are a must-read!

Mahadevi Varma

Mahadevi Varma’s writing style wheels the readers in like no other. Her essays and poems highlight important issues in society that drive the reader’s mind in a particular direction to think. Some of her most popular works are Deepskhikha, Nirja, Gillu, and Smriti ki Rekhaye. She has been bestowed with the Jnanpith Award in 1982.

Amrita Pritam

If you are someone who likes to read stories based on history, then Amrita Pritam’s works are for you. From writing about the partition of India to books and poems on Punjabi folk culture, Amrita Pritam’s work is unmissable! One of her widely-known works is Pinjar which also got adapted into the 2003 eponymous film. She has been bestowed with the Sahitya Akademi Award, Bharatiya Jnanpith, Padma Shri, and Padma Vibhushan as well.

Harivansh Rai Bachchan

Known as the frontrunner of the literary movement Nayi Kavita in the 20th century, Harivansh Rai Bachchan is one of the most popular Hindi language authors and poets. His body of work includes Madhushala and Neeli Chidiya among many other poems which are revered even today. He was bestowed with the Padma Bhushan award.

Munshi Premchand

Dhanpat Rai Srivastava, popularly known by his pen name Premchand, took the Hindi literary world by storm with his body of work. His books and poems were all mostly about the caste divide in society and also shed light on the poor condition of women. A few of Premchand’s works have been taught in schools as well. Some of his most popular works include Godaan, Karmabhoomi, Gaban, Mansarovar, and Idgah.
