Covid 19 Helped Jharkhand Girl Reunite With Family After Being Trafficked 3 Years Ago

Not to sound like a hopeless believer, but ever since I was a little girl, I have been taught to look at the silver linings of things. As humans, our basic nature is most often to grumpily point out things that aren’t going our way. But thanks to my mother who has always egged me to be grateful for what I have, I have learnt to look at the brighter side. Something that most of us learnt during the pandemic too, when we realised how we needed to be thankful for just being alive.

And while the pandemic may have till now been taking lives, turns out, it may have also helped save a life of a woman who was being trafficked against her will. The 20-year-old woman who is originally from Chatra’s Kalyanpur village in Jharkhand, was allegedly trafficked to New Delhi almost three years ago.

The young woman was lured by a trafficker named Fulchand and brought to Delhi, where she was being forced to work as a domestic help at a house in Delhi’s Janakpuri. However, during the coronavirus second wave, as the woman tested positive, she was taken to an isolation center in Sultanpuri.

There, the 20-year-old met other women from Jharkhand and ended up sharing her troubles with them. The fellow inhabiters at the center then put up a video of the woman on the internet, which was then spotted by a social activist from Jharkhand, Shobha Kujur, who went ahead to contact the local Chatra police about the matter.

As the police looked into the matter, it was found out that the details shared by the woman were actually true, for they verified, and Assistant sub-inspectors Kamlesh and Jacinta Minz then helped to bring the woman back home after 3 long years. The girl was reunited with her family of 5th May.

The girl in question also spoke on the matter as she said, “I am thankful to Shobha di and police officials. I had appeared in my matriculation examination and waiting for the results to come out in 2018, when I was lured by one man named Fulchand and taken to Delhi. I wanted to take up further studies but all my dreams have been shattered.”
