British Tourist Raped By Local Resident In Front Of Her Partner In Goa. Whatever Happened To Atithi Devo Bhava?

Every morning we wake up to the news of horrifying rapes across the country. And it’s never-ending. In yet another case, a British woman was allegedly raped near the Arambol beach in Goa in front of her male partner by a local man under the pretext of a massage. As per media reports, the local resident was a part of a group that illegally offered massage services near the beach, which is popular among international tourists. The victim, a middle-aged woman was on a trip to Goa when the man raped her under the pretext of giving her a massage while she was lying near the Sweet Water Lake close to the beach along with her partner.

According to a report by NDTV, the police shared that the incident took place on June 2 but was reported by the woman on Monday when she came to the Pernem police station to lodge a complaint after consulting with her family and seeking assistance from the British Embassy in India. The accused in question, 32-year-old Vincent D’Souza, who had earlier worked as a school librarian, was arrested on Monday itself, within an hour of the complaint being filed.

A senior police official told the news portal that the accused and victim both were sent for medical examination at the district hospital in Mapusa near Panaji on Monday night. The police further said that an FIR has been registered against the accused under Section 376 of the Indian Penal Code for rape and will be produced before the local court on Monday. He also shared that they have contacted the concerned police station to obtain his past records and the case is being probed. Deputy Superintendent of Police of Pernem, Siddhant Shirodhkar is supervising the investigation.

It’s shocking that in a country where we consider tourists to be god’s, they’re getting raped and molested and abused. As a nation, we want to keep our image clean on an international level but we fail to protect the tourists that come to explore our country. India has been called out for it’s rape culture and we hope to change that image but that’s not going to happen if tourists have to reach out to their country’s embassy in India to seek assistance after being raped or molested. And what’s more shocking is that in a place like Goa, where the economy runs on the income from tourism, tourists are not safe. What happens when tourists stop going to Goa because it’s unsafe?
