Saki Naka Rape And Murder Culprit Sentenced To Death By Special Court In Mumbai

Endless news on rapes in India. So many pending judgements in the court. There isn’t a single day when a rape news story will not appear on your phone’s notifications. It enrages me. The frequency with which the rape crimes are happening has not been in balance with the justice served to the victims. News on the culprits being punished for such monstrous crimes is rare, but it is happening. The Saki Naka rape case that happened last year in the month of September last year resulted in the victim’s death. On Monday, the final verdict was passed against the culprit of this heinous crime and has been sentenced to death.

According to news reports, 44-year-old Mohan Chauhan who was accused of raping and brutally killing the 38-year-old Dalit woman was sentenced to death by a special court in Mumbai. The man had been convicted under sections 302 (murder), 376A, and 376 (2)(m) of the Indian Penal Court. The judge of the special court HC Shende who ordered the punishment termed the crime as “rarest of the rare” citing the attack to be brutal, and the fatal injuries which lead to the woman’s death.

The prosecution in its demand for justice stated that the attack was cold-blooded and the attack on the victim’s private parts caused her death. In defence, Mohan Chauhan’s lawyer Kalpana Waskar said that the culprit had no past records of criminal cases, and also added that the death penalty would result in affecting Mohan’s wife and his dependents.

In a city like Mumbai, which is usually considered to be safe for women at any hour of the day, the Saki Naka rape case sent shock waves. It also raised concerns among the authorities to act immediately on the case. The culprit was arrested within 18 days after the crime by the Mumbai Police. However, it is still sad to see the Indian justice system lag so much in delivering justice to the victims.
