A Woman In Bengal Was Beaten Up And Her Hair Was Shaven Off For Having An Extra-Marital Affair
I strongly believe that there is nothing worse than cheating on your significant other. I’ve never been married but I have been on the other side of infidelity. It causes unbearable emotional turmoil. People always say, ‘once a cheater, always a cheater’. I agree. But there are a lot of double standards that exist that make it impossible for anyone to be objective. For instance, if a man has an affair it’s considered to be a symbol of his masculinity. He is high-fived and patted on the back for it. On the other hand, if a woman cheats on her husband, she is dragged through the mud. And I mean that in the most literal sense. I don’t condone infidelity but is torturing, abusing and humiliating the woman perpetrator the solution?
On Thursday, a 30-year-old woman in West Bengal was thrashed and tonsured by a group of angry men. These men seemed to believe that this woman was involved in an “illicit affair” with a local man. They also tied her husband to a tree. Police caught wind of this horrific incident after its video surfaced on social media. Please tell me, what does this insane level of violence solve?
According to reports, the villagers believed that the woman was having an extra-marital affair. They even held a meeting to discuss this matter. On Thursday, when the woman was returning home with her husband, they decided to beat her up and chop all her hair off. They then proceeded to tie her husband to a tree while they beat her to “teach her a lesson”.

The police have arrested seven people for carrying out this gruesome act. Why are men so hell bent on humiliating women? It’s disgusting that people in our country believe in beating women at any given chance and treating them like property. Yes, this woman made a mistake. Hundreds of men cheat on their wives and still, I have not read one report of a man being stripped, tonsured and humiliated for it.
Do you know what’s shocking? This incident comes only days after 10-12 people in another part of West Bengal stripped a woman, beat her up and paraded her around naked for having an extra-marital affair. In that case, the woman was counselled and all accused were put behind bars. In fact, after hearing about it, the National Commission of Women chairperson Rekha Sharma wrote to the police to ensure the perpetrators are punished.
We have two very similar and horrifying cases happening back to back. Obviously, we’re going wrong somewhere. It’s shocking how little respect these men have for women.
