Villagers In MP Tied A Rape Survivor And The Rapist With Ropes, Beat Them And Paraded Them Around The Village

Doing what I do, I spend a lot of time researching and writing about rapes and rape survivors. And if there’s anything I have learned it’s that in our country, even today, it’s the victims who are blamed, shamed and dragged through the mud. From the police to politicians to their own families, no one seems to be able to grasp the trauma these women go through. And it’s only getting worse. Recently, in MP, a rape survivor and her rapist were tied and paraded around their village. People are so barbaric sometimes.

According to reports, On Sunday in the tribal-dominated Alirajpur district of Madhya Pradesh, a 16-year-old girl was raped by a 21-year-old man. After the gruesome incident, the villagers tied the victim and accused with ropes and paraded them around the village. Of course, because showing the victim some actual decency and sensitivity is not an option. The police intervened and have arrested the accused and five other villagers.

A video showing the girl tied with ropes and being beaten has gone viral. They were forced to walk around the village while the other villagers shouted slogans like “Bharat Mata Ki Jai”. I never realised a rape was such a patriotic moment. The girl who was raped was rescued by police officers and two FIR’s were filed. A senior police officer said, “One of the cases was registered against the 21-year-old man who is accused of rape. Another FIR was registered against family members of the girl and villagers for parading her in the village and beating her.”

This is disgusting. Why are rape victims treated so horribly? And what’s with the patriotic slogans? What’s worse is that not one villager involved in this horrid incident thought to help the poor 16-year-old who was just raped. Instead, they tied her with her rapist, thrashed and paraded her around. What did that solve? It’s not about this one incident. Look at the larger picture for a second. If we can’t do anything to curb the rapes happening, for whatever reason, the least we can do is treat the rape survivors with dignity, sensitivity and not do anything to add to their trauma. How difficult is that?
