#ICW2016: Manish Malhotra’s Persia-Inspired Extravagance

Kicking off India Couture Week 2016 in Delhi last night was Bollywood’s favourite designer, Manish Malhotra. And when it came to pulling off a high octane collection dripping in glamour, the designer did not disappoint. Inspired by the stunning culture, architecture, and aesthetics of Iran, Malhotra sent 50 models down a miror-finished runway housed on a set that resembled a decadent Persian courtyard. Lush plants, intricate carpets, and brightly-lit lanterns set the mood for an indulgent collection, aptly titled The Persian Story.

 

 

While Pakistan’s hottest import Fawad Khan opened the show looking every bit the Prince of Persia, it was the heavily-embroidered womenswear pieces that stole the show. True to form, the designer presented a couture collection that fused rich fabrics like velvet and silk with dabka embroidery and badla work to produce some truly stunning results. The one-of-a-kind, opulent pieces were decidedly heavy in both concept and construction. So much so that showstopper Deepika Padukone seemed to be having a hard time walking down the runway in an opulent crimson lehenga with a long train that reportedly took three months to complete.

 

 

However, the biggest trend takeaway from last evening’s show was the off-shoulder blouse, which is going to be everywhere in the bridal season to come. Forgoing dupattas for Bardot-style blouses and sheer netted tops, the designer seemed to validate the fact that there’s nothing better than showing off bare shoulders for the modern Indian bride. Sanjay Narang of Hazoorilal Jewellers collaborated with the designer to create some stunning uncut polki diamond and pearl jewellery that perfectly complemented the extravagant clothes.
