Learn A Lesson On Style From These TV Shows

If you are looking to give your wardrobe a fresh look and need some major fashion inspiration then all you need to do is steal a glance at your TV screen. From period dramas to present-day trends, TV shows across all platforms seem to be drawing in viewers hook, line and sinker with characters who are serving up looks and style which are then steadily making their way into the closets of the myriads of fans and fashion enthusiasts alike. How can we forget Pamela Anderson’s iconic Baywatch swimsuit which became all the rage back in the early 90s thanks to that slow-motion scene that is etched in everyone’s minds till date?
With more and more shows pumping money into their costume department, haute couture and high fashion seem to be the call of the hour and these shows are the ones we turn to right before we hit the stores

Gossip Girl (2007-2012)

Prep-school meets the fashion runway to biker girl chic. The show that centred around the lives of a group of youngsters from the affluent Upper East Side of New York gave us a lesson or two on how to turn up the style quotient on a daily basis. Although the premise of the show was bucketloads of drama and gossip as the name of the show suggests, we mainly tuned in to see what Blair (played by Leighton Meester) and Serena (played by Blake Lively) donned when they attended their posh school or when they were getting steamy at a party at the Met. Carrying personalised Birkins and outfits from the likes of Zuhair Murad, Jenny Packham, Oscar De La Renta and well, the list goes on and on. Blair Waldorf gets all the credit for reviving the headbands that sold out as soon as the show became a hit.
Our Favourite Look: Although we’d kill for every single outfit worn by every single character on the show, we absolutely love this Zuhair Murad outfit as seen on Serena.

 

Dynasty (2017-Present)

At this point, we have come to the conclusion that a high dose of drama is directly proportional to amazing couture. A reboot of the 80s show of the same name which was also known for its extravagant costumes, the newer version is a mixing pot of present-day fashion trends. The family drama that is a mild reminder of the clash of family dynasties and the dysfunctional lives of the rich and famous (we are looking at you, Kardashian-Jenners), has become our go-to when we are looking up fashion trends. Be it Fallon Carrington’s business chic combined with the oomph-factor in her pantsuits or sassy Sammy Jo’s eccentric style which sees him donning animal print tuxedos from D&G and chunky jewellery like a boss. Meredith Pollack, the costume designer of the show has ensured that the show serves up fresh looks every episode and has featured enviable designer pieces including Gucci fanny packs, poofy Valli gowns and classy Tom Ford pieces.

Sex And The City (1998-2004)

This show needs no introduction and although it ended 15 years ago and even got two feature films, we still collectively sigh over all the clothes donned by the main protagonists of the show. And why wouldn’t we, since Carrie Bradshaw is one of the biggest pop culture icons thanks to her sartorial fashion choices. The show follows the lives of four women as they wade through the ups and downs of their love lives while living it up in the Big Apple. All of their wardrobes are covetable and we get to see fashion through the perspectives of four distinctively different women making strides in their particular careers. SATC has often been credited for inventing trends that are still relevant and are often times seen on the red carpet. Way ahead of it’s time in when it comes to the clothes, the show was filled with designer names like Givenchy, Dior, Vivienne Westwood and pretty much every other big name in the industry.
Our Favourite Look: We are in absolute awe of this newspaper dress on Carrie which was a John Galliano for Dior creation.

 

Schitt’s Creek (2015-Present)

Don’t go on the name of this show for the clothes in this Canadian sitcom are anything but shitty. The Netflix drama offers a look into the life of the Rose family who goes bankrupt and ends up in a town named Schitt’s Creek and although they are broke, the bankruptcy doesn’t mean that they compromise on their favourite designer labels like Balenciaga, Isabel Marant and even McQueen. A laugh riot coupled with drool-worthy clothes, we want in!

Mad Men (2007-2015)

The 60s were a glorious time, not only for ad agencies which are the prime focus of the show but also for the glamorous fashion statements made back in the days. Making even maternity style look alluring, the show brought to light timeless pieces from the hey-day of innovative fashion. Big hair, poofy sleeves, scarves, bright colours, retro sunglasses and statement jewellery are not a thing of the past anymore with many of these trends making it back on to the runway and being reinvigorated by designer brands.

Killing Eve (2018-Present)

You might think that a show based on a psychopathic killer might not be something you’d want to look to when you want to breathe some fresh life into your wardrobe but Killing Eve proves you wrong. The show gives the phrase, “dressed to kill” a whole new meaning. The lead protagonist who happens to be an assassin has a closet that we’d kill (no apologies for the pun) for. From the classic pussy-bow blouse from Chloé to a gorgeous emerald-toned satin coat by Jason Wu, the show has some of the most impeccable styles that are up for grabs this season.
Our Favourite Look: Besides the Molly Goddard outfit that has become viral now, we love this outdoor look with a Chloe blouse and shorts on Villanelle.

 

The Crown (2016-Present)

The period drama that focuses on the life of Queen Elizabeth is all but making waves ever since it first dropped on Netflix. And even though the critics are raving about the detailed way in which all the events have been brought to the silver screen, we can’t help but get into the details of the costumes worn by the characters in the show. Be it Elizabeth’s timeless wedding dress or Princess Margaret’s audacious way of dressing which managed to grab eyeballs back then and makes for statement pieces these days. The show is dotted with gems of designer pieces that we wouldn’t mind slipping into and feel like royalty every alternate weekend.
