Exclusive: Vaishali S and Lakmé Salon On Ocean-Inspired Collection and Inclusive Makeup at Lakmé Fashion Week X FDCI!

Get ready to dive deep into the mysteries of the ocean with Vaishali S’s latest collection, Beneath, which rocked the runway on the first day of Lakmé Fashion Week X FDCI 2023. This collection is all about the exciting journey of self-discovery that we all go through, and what better way to represent it than by taking a plunge into the darkness of the ocean? With the collaborative efforts from Lakmé Salon, it has resulted in a stunning colour palette that captures the vibrant spirit of the ocean. The colours are both bold and beautiful and have been carefully curated to mirror the many shades and hues that can be found in the ocean’s depths with a focus on sustainability.

In a candid conversation, the designer Vaishali S and Lakme Salon’s NCD Anupana Katyal take us through the creative journey they took together when they started to create looks for this collection.

1. What was the inspiration behind this oceanic theme of your collection?

Vaishali S- My first experience with underwater diving left me completely mesmerized by the incredible world beneath the surface. The shapes, colours, and sizes of the coral and fish were so captivating that they became the inspiration for my collection. As I translated these underwater wonders into the designs, I aimed to capture the essence of this mystical world and bring it to life through each piece.

2. How did you make your collection more environmentally friendly and sustainable?

Vaishali – Sustainability is at the heart of my creative process, and I’m always looking for ways to reduce waste and repurpose materials. That’s why I used all my leftover materials to create stunning installations and add unique textures to my garments. Even the accessories were carefully crafted using recycled hair, and the makeup looks were created with natural materials and pigments, ensuring that everything in the collection was both eco-friendly and chic.

3. Were there any challenges you faced while styling the models with the textured material and silhouette?

Vaishali – I firmly believe that we are all a part of nature, and my collection reflects this sentiment. The fabrics and garments were carefully chosen to create a seamless flow around the body as if they were an extension of ourselves. I wanted to capture the beauty of the ocean in each piece, while also celebrating our connection to it. Wearing these garments should feel like a natural extension of oneself as if they were always meant to be a part of us.

4. What are some of the challenges you faced while creating the looks?

Anupama Katyal– Collaborating with designers to create stunning hair and makeup looks is not just a challenge, it’s an exciting journey that brings everyone together in perfect harmony. It’s all about complementing the designer’s vision and creating a cohesive look that will make everyone say ‘WOW’. Seeing the clothes come to life with the perfect hair and makeup is a moment of pure magic, and the thrill of creating something truly amazing is what makes it all worth it.

5. How do you co-ordinate with the hair team when you create the makeup looks?

Anupama Katyal– When it comes to Lakme’s hair and makeup team, the coordination is already on point, and when we sit down together, magic happens! Creating the perfect hair and makeup look for one person is a collective decision that requires everyone’s input and creativity. We take the time to analyze and figure out what looks best, brainstorming and bouncing ideas off each other until we find the perfect solution. It’s all about bringing our individual talents together to create a masterpiece that will leave everyone speechless.

6. How do you make your looks more inclusive when it comes to models?

Anupama Katyal- I think because we make them look like who they are, that is what inclusivity is, whatever features you have we are not changing your face we are not making you look something you’re not we are doing your makeup to your exact skin tone, you don’t have to go fairer or darker you have a certain skin type we are just accentuating your features we are not altering them and I think that’s the most inclusive in fashion week.
