From Folklore To A Fun Party, FDCI x Lakmé Fashion Week Day 3 Saw Manish Malhotra, Rimzim Dadu, Ashish N Soni Bring Home Energetic Design Language

A mix of colours, prints and party-perfect designs, day 3 at FDCI X Lakmé Fashion Week 2022 displayed a wave of vibrance on the runway. From printed bucket hats, new age accessories to gelled up hair, I witnessed a multitude of designs on the runway, which was exciting and how.  And here are the designs that caught our attention.

Swatti Kapoor, Kiniho, Jajaabor

The three labels filled the ramp with light prints, water-shades, and muddy browns at the FDCI X Lakmé Fashion Week runway. From Swatti Kapoor’s ‘The Rise,’ Kiniho’s Khasi folk tale inspired collection, filled with Eric silk fabric to Jajaabor’s special tribute to the artisans of Bikaner– creators of the Usta Art, the three design varieties, paid homage to the folklore of India and its rich textile history, with an aim to put the art on the forefront.

Aisha Rao

Aisha Rao’s ‘Divergence’ collection was curated out of all the happy shades. Opening the show with a sprightful backdrop and colourful umbrellas, the line-up included everything from pocket full lehengas, bandhgalas, gowns, featuring a scenic fest, created by zardozi, pitta, patchwork on tissue fabric–which holds a special place in the designer’s creativity lab. All of it was styled with studded elf-esqué ear cuffs, with the Japanese umbrella turning into an accessory too. And closing the show for Aisha was, Mira Kapoor who paraded on the ramp, wearing a bustier- blouse and a beautiful fun lehenga, as a part of the designer’s up-graded version of slow, planet conscious fashion.

Nikita Mhaisalkar

Rustic and romantic, Nikita Mhaisalkar’s latest collection, titled–Terrain 2022, brought home the authentic, textile crafts from North America. From long-sleeved, sequinned kaftans, paired with embellished bikini shorts, jewel blue corsets featuring beads and sequins, some gorgeous separates to coffee-coloured headscarves, the line-up visibly had a liking for the signature Aztec pattern. Furthermore, the design play between sequins and tassel loaded strings, on breezy long jackets and studded jumpsuits delivered nomadic nuance, something Nikita’s designs have always brought to the runway.

Kaveri

I knew, I was invited to a printed tea party, as I took my seat for label Kaveri’s latest collection showcase. With old-school white benches set in a corner, surrounded by lush greens, and butterflies gracing the backdrop, Kaveri’s ‘Photographs and Memories’ collection was easy on the eyes and delivered the beauty of flowers. With gardenia at its core, models walked in the designer line-up’s delightful Indian ethnic wear, sitting alongside string summer dresses. What further caught my attention, were the vintage Victorian prints headlining old-school tapestry sling bags, and lacy loafers and slip-ons. Kaveri’s collection played around with the lovely Chintz, crochet laces, sheer organza hemlines, and comfortable silhouette designs, perfect for the upcoming summer.

Rajdeep Ranawat

As the models paraded on the runway, wearing statement tulips in their hair, and dark-toned ensembles, I knew the designer is here to express the importance of statement-making. Titled– ‘Sayuri,’ the collection included twirl-worthy skirts, maxi dresses, kaftans, kimonos, embellished with sequinned hemlines and replete with a version of digital printing. Amidst the bold print work, the collection offered a zen-like calm.

Siddhartha Bansal

Designer Siddhartha Bansal, played with candy colours for his latest showcase at FDCI X Lakmé Fashion Week’22. Titled– ‘Blooming Tales,’ Siddhartha’s collection reinvented the term– ‘bloom’ post the two-year-long halt. Dreamy and decorative, the stunningly embellished range of silhouettes declared paisleys as their hero. The luxurious line-up included a mix of smock dresses, balloon gowns, flouncy skirts and my favourite whimsical number in the shade blue, worn by actress Sonam Bajwa, who served as the perfect muse for the designer.

Aarti Vijay Gupta

Flora and fauna sealed the deal for designer Aarti Vijay Gupta’s showcase at FDCI X Lakmé Fashion Week. Presenting her Summer Resort 22-23 collection, Aarti’s signature intricacy to design was visibly back on the runway accompanied by fringes, draw-string slits, and matchy-matchy bags. Aarti further played around with greens, monochrome, and rustic browns for the showcase. Two Point Two

An intriguing set-up, made out of rubik’s cube inspired furniture, black and white floorings, fuchsia pink couches, all and all mirrored the collection displayed by designer Anvita Sharma. Bold shoulders, oversized pantsuits, tulle dresses, knee-high boots were all dipped in the brighter shades of citrus pink, and yellows, as geometric linear lines met floral bunches. Showcasing the journey of a butterfly, and a life behind closed doors, Anvita’s magical show setup had the invitees surprised. While I loved the power-play in the construction, what had my eyes on them were a variety of studded box bags, and transparent totes dipped in hues of orange and pink. While the music instantly pumped me up, the two ever-energetic showstoppers, actors Saqib Saleem and Huma Qureshi walked the ramp during different intervals and well, we enjoyed the party they hosted on the runway alongside designer Anvita Sharma.

boAt X Huemn

Eclectic and experimental, boAt X Huemn’s collaborative collection was a takeaway of trends for the guests seated in. Replete with the label’s signature face designs, inclusivity marinated with the world of pop culture was exciting for me to witness. From cool crop tops, oversized trenches printed T-shirts, gingham lungis, athleisure wear, distressed denim to printed masks, designs served nothing less than walls, spray-painted with dripping shades of blue and ocher green. With horn shoulders on blazers, styled with biker masks, and gloves, matched perfectly with boAt’s collection of earpieces, headphones, giant speakers and I must say, tech-accessory is going big and how.

Setting the tone with print on print suits, velvet red pussy bows, Ashish played around with neon-bordered lapels, floral shirts and stunning power suits, headlined by cherry pink and grey. Styling blazers with Khadi coloured crisp pants and oversized eyewear, the line-up was edgy at its best.

Engineering the new-age textiles, Rimzim Dady’s latest collection, titled– A sea of million stories opulent constructions, a luxe colour palette and magnificent shapes. From royal blue, sarees, sheen sherwanis to jewel-toned blouses, it indeed was a starlit roaster of designs. Dazzling and how, the party-perfect collection was filled with giant sequins, studded turtle necks, extreme cut-outs, statement trench coats, replete with boxy prints.
