‘Emily In Paris 3’ Fills Chaos In Both The Plot And Emily’s Closet

‘Emily In Paris 3’ Fills Chaos In Both The Plot And Emily’s Closet

Emily In Paris 3 is finally on Netflix, and after binge-watching the entire show on two sleepless nights, my eyes are swollen, and my soul is still asking for more of Gabriel. In the renewed season of the much-talked-about show, Emily is stuck between two jobs, two love interests and a lot of sexual tension. Besides, Emily’s usual saga of a new girl in the city, her friends Mindy Chen, Camillie, and boss Sylvie, have better storylines to watch out for. But strictly talking in sartorial terms. costume designer Marylin Fitoussi single-handedly dressed Ms Cooper this time.

A mix of Parisian pizzaz, and still a little bit of American chic, Emily doesn’t wear the best of designs but still shines in the frame with her choice of loud colours. What disappoints me this year is the lack of a standout piece, nothing that makes me hit that pause button and look out for the designer behind that dress. It happened several times with Mindy, I am sorry not with Emily.

This year, our girl fashioned her way into a new Parisian marketing firm, with monumental dresses and of course her hair bangs. What fails in the recipe of designing her wardrobe in season three, is the missing Emily maximalism, which sure was tacky, but still tried to be impressive. This year, Emily wore scrunchies on half ponytails and a metallic skirt with a sweater. Nothing that any fashion nerd would approve of. Well, all that costume drama came screaming onscreen, signalling the exit of Sex And The City-style veteran–Patricia Field from this show. Marylin Fitoussi uses her skills, and lessons from Patricia, but fails to carve that Emily sparks for us.

With more of Alfie and less of Gabriel, the show also has the usual wedding day drama, that might remind you of Friends. While boys are hotter than ever this season, what steals my attention is Mindy, and Sylvie finally taking the centre spot. Much like the messy plot, the wardrobe keeps a check on both chaos and calmness. At one point you see her in a dramatic Dolce & Gabbana top, and at another in a simple polka-dotted dress, with no sign of accessories. After two seasons pass, Cooper is still not sure of what her personal style is. It’s like going back in circles, again, and again.

Sartorial excellence finally entered the chat, when Emily arrived in Parisian scarves, and printed socks teamed with heels. What also makes me happy about this American finding her feet in Paris, is admitting the weather, and following a season-specific dress code. With every dress, that she wears, she teams a matching, rather colossal coat, that has both sequins, and feathers stitched to it.
For times at Savoir, turned Agence Grateau, Emily juggles between gingham blazers, and power suits, explaining her new adventure with power dressing. This latest twist in her wardrobe, explains her entry into a truly Parisian office, and why she shouldn’t now look ringarde. It is the only time, that I enjoy her wardrobe. This year, what I miss the most are her berets, the itty bitty bags that would always intrigue my interest.

In the name of retro, she wears a gingham swimsuit, with a pair of oversized sunglasses, and I am not okay with it. Prints here, headline every look that Emily chooses to keep in her closet. Mixed with a bizarre print are futuristic cuts, that she wears for a weekend night to cheer for Mindy at the jazz club. Amongst the 14,000 pieces that Marilyn Fitoussi curated for our American dreamer, designer houses like–Magda Butrym, Giuseppe Di Morabito, Giambattista Valli, and Dolce&Gabbana are imperative members.

Some of my rare moments of Emily in a spectacular look is her plaid-on-plaid ensemble, from Stella McCartney coupled with a newsboy hat, and the famous Carolina Herrera poncho shoulder bag. The look strikes a balance between structure, and comfort, seasoned with Emily-flavoured maximalism. For the finale episode as well, the actress finds out the truth (no spoilers here), wearing a romantic, anti-fit Giambattista Valli floral dress, with hair dressed using tiny flowers, and a half bun. Costume designer Fitoussi also weaves fashion’s new craze for platform heels, by allowing Emily to dip her toes in some glossy, Barbiecore numbers. This time, she doesn’t bring ’em fingerless gloves but continues with her trail of flamboyant, almost dreamy overcoats. With hair bangs, she also experiments with a bunch of fancy buns, that make you think, “wait, is it a bob?”

The tall stack of couture and confusion in Ms Cooper’s closet is what builds her look this season.
You may hate or love her sartorial sense, or even question star Lily Collin’s sense of choosing the right scripts, the show again proves cinema’s superpower of delivering escapism. With a window to a dream world, where the protagonist has answers to every query and almost an invisible wand to fix every problem that pops open in her life, she also breaks the rules of fashion, which allows her to experiment. This is what makes us wait for Emily In Paris to arrive every December on our screens, much like the world waits for the season of greetings. The hate watch is still adding up more views to the show, which we can’t help but not skip.

In terms of style as well, what makes Emily’s wardrobe a wonderland for most of us, is its sheer impractical nature. One could only dream of wearing a fancy number to a cubical setup, and yes, without the worry of people staring at you. With every season, you wait to watch, what more disastrous is on its way to make us wonder, why we love the show. Hopefully, the next season, if at all it is coming, has more of fashion, and of course our beautiful Gabriel.
