Inspiring artists and designers across the world, many international labels often join hands with Indian designers and artists to weave a masterpiece for the world stage. Walking a similar path is the French luxury fashion house, Dior. It was quite recent when the designer label showcased its spring-summer 2022 collection at the Musée Rodin in Paris on January 24. But what caught attention a day later were the backdrops, which added to the ambience of the show. Inspired by the creations of Delhi-based artist couple Madhvi and Manu Parekh, Maria shared her journey of weaving the experience for the audience, “My journey to India began many years ago and is now taking shape in the realisation of this incredible project. Embroidery as a central point, not as a decorative element, but as a design action that gives structure to the material.”

Sharing the artwork that graced as the backdrop of the runway she added, “for the Dior Couture Spring-Summer 2022 we present the work of Madhvi and Manu Parekh, a couple of Indian artists. Their work differs from a formal point of view but is incredibly akin because of their common cultural roots and figurative tradition. The set is entirely created by the Indian Chanakya school of embroidery, alternating Madhvi’s embroidered works with those of Manu, adapted to an environmental dimension, creating a narrative suspended between myth and realism that unfolds along the set walls like a film.”

A display of intricate thread work, the line-up of simple tailor-made pieces on the models, drove the viewers’ attention towards the beautiful creations by the Indian artists. Drawing heavy inspiration from folk art and the symbol of female energy, one of the artists behind the work Madhvi Parekh portrays a strong affinity towards modernism and abstraction. Their work formed a base for the show and with artworks carefully embroidered at the Chanakya School of Craft in Mumbai under the guidance of its director Karishma Swali, who further shared her experience and wrote, “How can I explain the joy and gratitude of this journey of over 2 decades of working together with a shared passion of craft excellence. I could not be more fortunate to have learnt from the absolute best and you continue to inspire me every single day with your vision, your creative genius, and your love. Thank you Maria Grazia from the bottom of our hearts and sending you all our love forever.”

The show marks the first collaboration with a male artist for Maria, who previously has partnered with female artists across different media for many past Dior collections. We’re proud to watch the works of Indian artists shine on the global stage.
