Euphoria’s High-On Glam Makeup Looks Have A Deeper Meaning And Here’s What We Know

Okay, guys, I think I am officially obsessed with Euphoria, especially season two and I can’t wait to watch episode six. Firstly because, it’s going to be all about Maddy V/s Cassie, which means a whole lot of spicy drama, and secondly I wanna see more of their makeup looks that always push me really hard to learn some ‘paint thy face’ skills too. While I can go, on and on about the impressive, and engaging plot, which also has my attention, courtesy of the smooth camera work, what seems to have taken the internet by storm is the show’s high-school glam, makeup and outfits. From cut-creases to diamond liners, there’s nothing the girls of Euphoria haven’t tried out and probably my best friend too, who continues to send me her experiments with make-up, that seek inspiration from the show.

Every American show portraying the usual high-school drama gifts us with a fashion guru to go gaga over, I mean do y’ll remember Lara Jean’s gingham skirts and scrunchies from To All The Boys I’ve Loved Before? Oh Boy, it was the only thing that could keep me away from staring at sweet boy Peter Kavinsky. And with Nate being my aankhon ka taaraa this year (although he’s quite the toxic kind) plus queen Zendaya (I believe in Z supremacy), the show’s lovely experiments with make-up have all our attention. In an attempt to bring back, face embellishments and stickers, Euphoria reminds us of  70’s blockbuster makeup trend. Initially used as a tool to conceal imperfections and facial flaws, face stickers have weaved a gripping narrative of their own in the beauty world. Be it pearls, sequins or starry tinsels, embellishments of all kinds are making it to runways and showreels alike. And an apt example of this is Euphoria (both the seasons).

Glossy, dramatic and uff, so-bold, the show’s leading cast and their glossy eyes, reflect the plot and how. With many interesting theories surfacing on the internet, one such tale has me blown away. The Doniella Davy magic on screen (makeup artist of the show), has a deeper meaning hidden behind the pearls and stars. And helping me solve that case, is this video, which decodes that Maddy and Kats’ makeup looks more similar on purpose, with progressing episodes. Yes, that’s right, and as revealed by the makeup artist and the theory too,  the two characters’ matching makeup shows their growing bond. Attributing to the birthday girl’s makeup look (Maddy here), Kat’s blue-liner also implies that the two got ready together before going to Lexi’s house. Unlike Cassie and Maddy’s super competitive relationship, it feels like Maddy and Kat really have each other with makeup serving as a vehicle for telling that story.

Not just that, but several other instances also express a character’s inner emotions projected on their face. Like Rue’s glitter tears, Kat’s sudden transformation which unleashes through the strokes on her eyelids, or Jules’ red inner corners, that often pop out during stressful plot twists. Weaving the character threads differently, makeup magician Doniella Davy’s revival of artistic, dreamy and at times fierce eyes, add a fresh perspective to the show that also nurtures every character arc with time and a back story to interpret their current actions. While we all remain obsessed with the white clouds and ombre on their lids, face stickers play an important role in defining many of their looks.

Attractive and symbolic, face embellishments and stickers have finally found their feet in 2022’s biggest trends, all thanks to Euphoria‘s high-school divas. And believe it or not, these stickers help curb stress and engine escapism. So ladies, there’s no way I am not trying this new Instagram-approved trend that doesn’t serve just one but multiple purposes, as I continue to binge-watch my current favourite–Euphoria.
