From ‘Masaba Masaba’ To ‘Euphoria,’ 8 Films And Shows For The Perfect Fashionista Binge

Fashion has often found its way through films and weaved some iconic characters for us to seek inspiration from. Some narratives have not only been a mode of entertainment but have gone beyond to explore new fashion trends. Be it K3G‘s Poo or Euphoria‘s Maddy, we have grown up watching these female leads in their most stylish best. Over the years, many films and new shows in the recent past have made sure to deliver the charm of a classic fashion icon from the 90s through new-age characters. Surprisingly, fashion today has more to offer than just trends, as it deals with the idea of pushing the story forward through thoughtful makeup and silhouettes. So, if just like me, you too love a good show that caters to unique fashion, add these eight names to your watchlist.

Aisha

While the west is definitely ahead in braiding films with popular fashion, the Kapoor sisters weaved one for Indian viewers. Produced by Anil and Rhea Kapoor and headlined by actress Sonam Kapoor, the 2010 film–Aisha might have failed at the box office, but it indeed was a gift for every fashion nerd. The film was a trendsetter in every sense. With costumes designed by Pernia Qureshi and designer Kunal Rawal, the film dressed every character in fancy designer outfits, and also followed the wild, viral makeover trope like every classic fashion film.

Cocktail

After Aisha, Bollywood tried its hands at delivering another fashion icon through Deepika’s character Veronica in the 2012 film–Cocktail. A game changer for the actress’ career, the film portrayed friendships, love and brilliantly presented a woman’s shades of greys on the big screen. Directed by Homi Adajania and costumes designed by his wife and ace costume stylist Anaita Shroff, the film curated some of the year’s biggest trends and moulded Deepika in a never-seen-before avatar.

Emily In Paris

Fast forward to 2020, fashion enthusiasts found another character to obsess over, as Netflix released Emily In Paris season 1. Featuring Lily Collins, the American girl in Paris story brings a dreamy job to our screens, with of course a not-so-French closet in place. Through the central character–Emily, we explore what it looks like to be a maximalist dresser. Designed by costume designers Patricia Field who is known for her fabulous work in Sex And The City and Marylin Fitoussi, Emily and her Parisian friends pick only the best of designer creations to dress. Following the idea of escapism, their outfits might not be an easy purchase for your wallet but they definitely look amazing on the big screen.

Euphoria

Speaking of shows, how can one not talk about the HBO show Euphoria, which made some applaudable trends in makeup and fashion. Created by Sam Levinson, this HBO show adds more depth to a classic teen drama with plenty of social messages for its viewers. And while the plot takes a unique turn in every new episode, fashion rests at the core of this show. With wardrobes designed by Heidi Bivens and emotional glam by makeup artist Doniella Davy, the show uses every character’s closet as a mode to push the plot forward. And as the show continues to bring newer trends for everyone to follow, its leading ladies from Maddy to Cassie and Rue have a unique style for every personality. Pick yours!

Masaba Masaba

Closer to home, Netflix gave a peek into the life of popular Indian designer and daughter of actress Neena Gupta–Masaba Gupta through the show Masaba Masaba. And how can a show about India’s favourite designer not have impeccable style? Right? Besides the central character, everyone from Neena ji to Masaba’s friend–Gia serves some looks in the signature Masaba print. The narrative also takes us behind the scenes of a fashion show and decodes the success story of the designer for audiences.

Do Revenge

Paying homage to the biggest trends of 90s fashion and classic styles was Netflix’s 2022 film–Do Revenge. Starring Camila Mendes, and Maya Hawke in pivotal roles, the film also follows the classic makeover trope, alongside fun plaid school uniforms and feathered pens inspired by Cher from Clueless. Fashion and makeup also hold a deeper meaning in the movie, as they drop certain hints about the upcoming plot through the central characters of Camila and Maya. A must-watch if you’ve loved every 90s film.

The Sex Lives of College Girls

The Mindy Kaling and Justin Noble show for HBO Max explores the classic storyline of American teen drama. This story of four eighteen-year-olds is wisely styled by costume designer–Salvador Perez, who uses dramatic prints, colours and silhouettes to define each character’s wardrobe in the show. With classic black resting in the wardrobes of all four, actress Amrit Kaur’s character Bella rekindles our love for gingham skater skirts, funky knitwear and more. Not to forget Leighton Murray’s signature high ponytails, colour pop blazers and tweed short suits.

And Just Like That…

Creators of the popular sitcom–Sex The City, paid homage to the original with a brand new sequel in the year 2021. Bringing back Carrie Bradshaw, Miranda and Charlotte to our screens sans Samantha Jones, the comedy-drama explores old friendships, love and relationship with trendsetting fashion. And while the show couldn’t match the charm of the original, the fashion lived up to its name. This time around, Carrie introduced us to some new additions in her couture closet and also faced some flack for calling the Indian-born Falguni Shane Peacock lehenga, a saree.
