After celebrities like Sonam Kapoor, Richa Chadha, Swara Bhasker, and others expressed their opinions and supported the Muslim students, the Dangal actress Zaira Wasim came forward to raise her voice against the injustices on Muslim women. She shared a lengthy post on her social media account to criticise the hijab ban and said that hijab is not a choice but an obligation in Islam. The Secret Superstar actress spoke about “the inherited notion of hijab being a choice is an ill-informed one.” She said that a woman who wears the hijab is fulfilling an obligation enjoined upon her by the God she loves and has submitted herself to and criticised the system for stopping and harassing women for wearing hijab. “I, as a woman who wears the hijab with gratitude and humility, resent and resist this entire system where women are being stopped and harassed for merely carrying out a religious commitment.” she wrote.

Wasim mentioned that it’s an absolute injustice to make women choose between education and hijab. “What is this if not a bias with people who confirm it acting in support of it? On top of all this, building a facade that all this is being done in the name of empowerment is even worse when it is quite exactly the opposite of that. Sad,” Zaira concluded.

Earlier, the Advocate General representing the state in the case argued that wearing a hijab is not an essential religious practice of Islam during the hearing. He further added that the hijab ban in colleges does not violate the constitutional right to practice the religious freedom of the students. The petitions are being heard by a bench of Chief Justice Ritu Raj Awasthi, Justice JM Khazi, and Justice Krishna M Dixit.

The court ruled that no religious garment will be worn in college till the matter is pending. Since then, Muslim teachers and students are being asked to remove their burqas and headscarves before entering college.
