From Gangubai Kathiawadi To Anna Delvey, 6 Strong Female Characters Who Inspired Us This Year
I love consuming content but more than that I love female-centric content. Over the year, we’ve seen Bollywood change for the better. Actresses have gone from being more than just a sidekick or a supporting character. Not only do we get to see women headlining the entertainment industry but we’re also seeing strong female-centric scripts and some truly amazing female characters on-screen. While it did take us a long time to get here, we finally have some headstrong feminist female characters. And what’s not to like about a character like that? So, this women’s day let’s take a look at all the fierce, independent, strong and opinionated female characters that the entertainment industry has gifted us this year.
1. Gangubai From Gangubai Kathiawadi
Just like the narrator says at the end of the film, crying was her fate and smiling was her destiny. Played by Alia Bhatt, Gangubai’s character didn’t cry over spilt milk, she channelled her anger and energy in the right direction to empower women. She did not fight her circumstance but instead, she made good use of them to uplift the women around her.
2. Anamika Anand From The Fame Game
Played by Madhuri Dixit Nene, Anamika Anand from The Fame Game was a strong-headed woman who built a life for herself beyond her husband, kids and family. She’s a grounded yet determined woman who speaks her mind but she does so kindly.
3. Naina Jaiswal From A Thursday
Naina Jaiswal from A Thursday played by Yami Gautam is my favourite female character. She comes from a dark place but she has her heart in the right place. Naina is gentle but also fierce at the same time. She knows how to fight for her rights and get her justice and it may not be the right path but she has some strong principles and moral values.
4. Anna Delvey From Inventing Anna
A woman operating and conning people from one of the most male-dominated spaces of all time – finance, is no cakewalk. From networking to fitting into the social norms, Anna Delvey, played by Julia Garner in Inventing Anna, knew how to play her cards right to get the job done. TBH, we know she would’ve had it easier had she been a man but broke all the norms while fitting into the norms. And the fact that she was smarter than some of the brightest minds at such a young age. Had it not been for the con, she could’ve done great things.

5. Juhi Adhikari From Mithya
Played by Huma Qureshi, Juhi Adhikari was a headstrong and determined woman who stood her ground. She did not let anyone pull her down nor did she back down from a challenge. I won’t say that she was perfect because she made her fair share of mistakes but she didn’t let it hold her back from doing the right thing either. I mean, she clearly chose to not give in to blackmail.
6. Selina Kyle Aka Catwoman From The Batman
Played by Zoë Kravitz, Selina Kyle aka Catwoman is her own person. She’s not some sidekick instead she is her own hero who finds and picks her own battles. She’s not someone who just hangs out with Batman, she’s a woman who is an equal partner. And TBH, she did save batman!
